2001 4Runner..key stopped working...worn out?
Lately I've been noticing my key sometimes has a hard time fitting or turning in the ignition.
Well today, I could not even turn the ignition more than a 1/2 inch, and then it wouldn't budge.
AAA came out, and they said it appears that they key itself looks worn out.
Has anyone had this happen or does it make sense?
Its definitely not the starter or the battery, its almost like putting the wrong key in the ignition.
I have a couple of questions:
a)what the hell do I do now?
b) my wife had an extra key on her keyring, but it doesn't have the black top on the key, it's an all metal Toyota key - will that work on my ignition? Im thinking it wont.
I need help! Do I have to go to a dealership and get raped for a new key?

you shouldn't need to get a key from the dealership. ive got a 95 and the same thing happened. if you move the key back and forth in the ignition while putting just a little pressure while turning it then you might be able to get it to work a while longer. if you're wifes key is probly just the valet key. which just doesn't open the lock on the glovebox. (assuming you have one) i had to take the handle off of the passenger side and take it to a locksmith and have them make one from that. its a pain in the butt but i got the job done
