YEA YEA! Its about time i start another build up thread of some sort. Here is the deal. I have the 86 EXT cab and im planning out my new stereo for it. Its going to include 2 10s inbetween the bucket seats, than a shelf behind the seats with a speaker box on either side and an amp in the center. Lets see what you guys have come up with!!! please? Im still debating on covering it in black carpet, or covering it with fiberglass resin. I dunno yet

You have my vote for carpet. Sorry, no pics of my system. I'm still working on phase one.....getting the $$$ together for it.

i would say go for the black carpet. i used to have a R.F. 12 in a homemade box. i kept it in the center between the seats to keep it in place and make it more comfortable to ride in because sub behind the seat gets real old real fast. i am going to be putting in an infinity perfect 10 sometime in the next 3 or 4 weeks when i come home from college. but i think having a 10 will be nicer than a 12 because the box is much smaller. but between the seats is the best spot for subs. but if you are going to be making your own box go for the good 3/4 mdf. what kind of subs were you thinking of putting in?

Your cab is gonna be thumping, I would put them behind the center console, not as part of it or your gonna vibrate the thing apart. I would make a box that faces the rear and put a 10 in it, 2 10s will be LOUD in an enclosed space.

This is part of the reason I have no subs in my truck, to little a space and to much noise. Good way to go more deaf than I already am.

I thought about one 10...but I dont know yet. That may work. What do you think about having the amp in between the seats on the console, than the sub all the way in the back between the seats?

I like that idea better, amp is mounted as part of the console inside (removable panel maybe) and wires go out to sub that faces rear.

Well this is the plan....Have a center console between the seats with a amp inside of it. It will have a removeable top as an arm rest. Than in the back behind the seats im going to build a box out of MDF for the sub. On the box there will be a 6X9 speaker box on each side, kind of cocked inwards with a 10 inch sub in the middle of those. Than I have to decide if im going to fiberglass it or carpet it.

Yeah, think about those kids who have a trunk full of subs. Well, now think about what if would be like climbing inside that trunk.....

that sounds pretty cool. even with a 150w rockford 12 i felt like i was going deaf. but if you dont use the space in the center console putting the amp would be a cool idea.

2 12"s are logically overkill. only b/c its 2 of the same size (but 2 different types of speaker in its own box is good.
the best system will have at least 1 speaker for every "range" in frequencies.

choose a vendor/manufacturer and get at least 1 of every size speaker.
but that too is overkill, if you do put a 12 in there, just use one, and make the other a 10 or a 8. your overall sound will be more "full".

as for placement. i will write up 3 options. (that i know of)
i would consider building the fiberglass (or carbon fiber) cabinet into the truck. either a walk-through into the bed, or a drop out behind or under the seats.

both of those ideas are seriouse, and will take a commitment of always having a great system installed. but its worth it.

i helped make a mazda b200 into a walkthrough, but the base of the bed was higher than the floorboard of the cabin. so after we did it, we thought it would've been better to drop 5 or 6 inches through a port in the floor and glass over it. (it did sound awesome btw).

however, if you dont want to cut into any sheetmetal. and need deep notes, look under and inside your dash for empty areas you can mold a cabinet into.

off toyota, but on topic-
my bmw was my last project, and even though its ugly, it works.
15" dual v.c. Phoenix Gold sub, in a f.glass enclosure. molded into my full size spare- inverted into the trunk. stove pipe porting into the cabin (its a cabrio)
and, i can drown out semi's on the freeway with pure tunes (with the top down). (and also get ringing in my ears, which means.....too loud at times).

my SPL is 122 at the front seats.
also
the further away you are from the speaker, the better you can distinguish the lower sounds.
i love the presence of a 15 or 18, very low vibrations w/tons of pressure.
but a 12 is awesome too.

anyways
hope that helps

above is the bmw, a driving legend.
below is my new(er) toy. a wheeling legend. (im very lucky to have found such great rides) the truck is the daily. (or will be) and this is my current project. replacing the heater core. its 8 hours to this point (going slowly, taking pix, and documenting a.m.a.p.)
if you dont have A.C. there is enough room for about 5 cubic feet (at least) w/a molded cabinet. but realistically i would opt for a 2 foot, or 1.5 w/stovepipe port.
you can trick a sub into thinking its in a bigger box w/chaotic walls and porting.

hope this helps
