Vibrating when coasting?

1993 22re pickup 4x4

Whenever I coast with the tranny in neutral (over 30 mph or so), I get a vibrating like the ujoints or driveshaft is bad....

...it does not do it when I'm in gear or when I have the clutch pressed in...only when in neutral, coasting...like when I see a red light ahead.

Could it be the driveshaft or ujoints? The only reason I don't think so because the driveshaft wouldn't even be turning in neutral, would it?

I used to have a rattling at around 50mph in gear, but I changed my ujoints and that problem stopped.

I just got new brakes, and they did the wheel bearings....so what else could it be?

thanks!

Is the vibration in the steering wheel or the ass?

This might sound weird but did you check and make sure 'they' tightned the lugnuts properly?

Uhh....ujoints DO move in neutral; they turn whenever the wheels turn!

I would think you would get the sound when power is applied, too. Try this:

In first gear, drive to @ 25 mph, then let off the gas abruptly, then throttle back on again hard, then back off again. If you hear a "clunk" when you do this, you probably need to replace at least ONE ujoint!

Thanks guys....

The vibration is in the seat...not the steering.

I'll try the last test TNRabbit suggested...

I didn't think the ujoints moved when it was in neutral either, but apparently they do? I don't know.

The vibration was happening before the brake job..so I doubt it's the lug nuts.

I changed the ujoints about a year ago that got rid of the problem when driving about 55mph. But I remember that the slip yoke end was a real nightmare and I busted it up pretty bad....but I got the joint out and it went in good...

Ujoint AND dshaft will be turning if you are moving, if you are stopped, they are stopped. Probably a bad ujoint, sloppy slip yoke, if it was the dhaft being bent you'd most likely feel it underpower as well, but check it anyway.
