I have a 1989 4runner with a 22re and 5speed. I redid the brakes when i bought it in april. The parts place gave me V6 calipers for the front. I put on new rotors, pads, and shoes and wheel cylinders in the rear. I bled the brakes more than once but the brakes were always kinda weak. the pedal would go way down and if i let off and reapplied it would get better so after research I found that my master was too small for the new bigger calipers so the search began. I found this on Ebay. Only 50 dollars shipped with 10 dollars off coupon from Ebay.

looks like the guy didnt empty the resevor, the box was soaked and fluid on the booster, had to clean it up. I painted the booster with some good ole rustoleum.


took out the old booster and master.


The guy left the tee with the line to the front so the other lines just connected right up.


Got it all bled and tried it out, it is a major improvement.
has anyone who has done this feel that the brakes are too touchy? they work almost too good, I barely push on the pedal and it grabs hard. I also had removed the lspv from the rear, could this be the problem? if so I will order a wilwood proportioning valve and put that in. well there it is, my brake upgrade.

mine was a big improvement, your problem could be the LSPV. I know what it does but I don't know the side effect of completely removing it.

I did this to my 86 4Runner, i got the master cylinder and brake booster from a 92 4Runner, and it was a nice improvement. In the next few months i want to upgrade to vented rotors and V6 calipers.

not sure if its the LSPV or not, the rears dont lock up if I get on it hard so not sure. is there adjustment on the arm to the booster. maybe too much pressure to soon, not sure. hopefully someone will have some insight.

The LSPV sets the braking presure for the rear brakes. When you put weight in the back of the truck the rear of the truck settles down, witch makes the LSPV rod come up, and this gives you more rear braking power. With no weight in the bed the LSPV rod is lower decreasing braking to the rear because there is no weight in the rear.

Planning on doing this upgrade too but in stages for $$ reasons. Anyone have any input on which one to do first, MC/Booster or Calipers/Rotors? Sounds like booster first from Cougar's post above.

Just get some bigger tires so the brakes don't feel so touchy.

just go out and unbolt it from the rear end and zip tie it all the way up and drive it like that. that will just about tell you what it will do if it was gone.

I have removed mine and the abs as well and noticed no difference.

in short it should just give more brake line pressure to the rear if removed correct?

When its not there or if you remove it you will need to install a valve that you manually adjust, otherwise your rear brakes will lock up with out it.

yea i removed mine all together. I just got 31,s so I wont be getting any bigger tires anytime soon. I hit the brakes pretty hard to see and the rears dont lock up. Does adjusting the arm to the booster do anything with the amount of brakes and how quick it is applied?? They are working way better than before and I think with the wieght of the boat and trailer it should be perfect.
