Speedometer not working.

Hello. I just recently purchased a 1992 4runner SR5 V6 auto transmission. The speedometer doesn't work. The odometer, and tripometer do though. First off from what I've read, I believe the vehicle to have an electronic speed sensor, and not a cable operated speedometer. Does the vehicle speed sensor control the odometer and trip? If so, that leads me to believe the speedo head is hanging up. What's happening is that the speedo basically doesn't work, but sometimes it spikes to 40 and just stays there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I already have the link to the FSM. Thank you.

The VSS (electronic speedometer sensor) drives both the speedometer and odometer (and the cruise control and some ECM functions). So if your odometer works, your problem is in the instrument panel.

I've never worked there, but "spikes to 40 and just stays there" sounds like a mechanical problem -- like a bent needle. Alas, the needle is driven by a stepper motor, so you may run out of simple repair opportunities.

Good luck!

Awesome! Thank you for the feed back. The cruise control works as well. Is it possible to just change the speedometer head? Or does the entire instrument panel have to be swapped? I just want to get as much info as I can before I tear it apart. I'm used to working on diesel trucks; I find them much easier to work on than consumer level cars and trucks. Thanks again.

You might be able to open the cluster and swap out the speedo, if thats the issue, i would just find a whole one to swap out tho.

There is a place around my house that deals with only toyota's they will probably have it. The speedo has been working as of late, so it's a odd issue. Got to be a bad speedo head. Thanks again
