OD light flashing, tranny starting out in 3rd gear!
Thought it was the speed sensor, put one in and its doing the same thing. You have to manually shift it everytime you come to a stop because it stays in third gear. The OD light flashes on and off randomly, This is a 92 4runner with 180,000 miles.....

Sounds like my transmission did. It doesn't look good from this point. The O/D Off light flashing means you have codes to pull. I think you can read them by counting the number of times the light flashes. There is a procedure you can follow in the FSM. You can also drain the fluid, pull the pan, and look for metal shavings in the bottom of the pan. Metal shavings would be a sure sign that the tranny is close to death. Have you had any transmission overheating problems?

It's probably a shift selonoid. They are replacable. Your tranny is an A340H and has an ECT so it is electronically shifted with an electronic brain. see this section below......

What codes are you getting is the first step
according to this....

i have the exact same problem. i pulled the codes and they were for the lock up and number 2 solenoids and the number 2 speed sensor, codes 61,63, and 64. i got some used solenoids from a guy on here and dropped my pan, changed the filter, and installed the solenoids. the fluid and the filter looked good and i put it all back together and no change. i haven't gotten the speed sensor that i bought from the guy i got the solenoids from, so that could possibly be a problem. i read on here somewhere that since the speed sensor works on magnetism, over time it attracts metal shavings and debris and that you can just pull it out and clean it and that will fix it, but i havn't tried that. i have noticed that after i have been driving for a while, shifting manually, that if i leave it in drive it will begin to shift normally for a while untill i turn the engine off and crank it again and it is back to the old ways. i am going to probe the ect for voltage and resistance against my service manual as soon as i get the chance.
aaronw on here turned me on to axiom automotive for a solenoid kit for less than 200 dollars.

Pulled the codes, had codes on all 4 solenoids and both speed sensors, tech said it was a wiring issue or ECM, couldn't find anywiring problems and tried another ECM same thing. Pulled the pan and all the solenoids checked out fine, For some reason the ECM is not telling the tranny to downshift, chime in with some help guys, a half a dozen techs have looked at this thing and none have solved it......

read my post, the solenoids are working when 12v is applied to them, for some reason they are not getting power....

If I can remember someone said if that happen you need to clean the E17 which is located under the power steering pump were two tube's connect to it, you need to unscrew that part and clean the carbon buildup inside it, you be glad that you did cause when I did on mine it was totally clog with some sort of dirt or carbon.. hope that solve your problem. I also have that shifting problem were sometime you need to manually shift it, but I got a code which turn out to be solenoid #2, well I'm giong for the set to replace mine..
