Need help and lots of it! Can't get hood open

First, in all the work I did I some how disconnected the hood latch cable and now I can't open the hood, so how do I get the hood open?

Then after I got it started all seemed fine, it smoked for a bit but ran. Now it kind of seems like I'm mis-firing. I'm going to do a compression check as soon as I get time and the hood open.

Also, I can't get the transmission to shift. I was at full throttle and no shift, I hit about 4.5k rpms and kind of hit a rev limiter. I talked to a buddy and he told me I may have to re-program the transmission, is this true? It is the A340H transmission and for a list of things I have done look here -

try pulling the grill and the bumper? IIRC you should be able to get the grill off, maybe it'll give you access to the hood latch

I'm sorry I'm not much help but:

did you notice the irony with your avatar?

To do that you have to open your hood.

that is a good ?

i would try the dealer, than, a small childs arm w/pliers or a long thin screw-driver to do the pull-wires work.

its a spring loaded lock.
also, on mine, that whole contraption is held on the front by 3 *(10 or 12mm) bolts.

using a slim wrench/wratchet would do it from below the truck.
(wear long sleeves so you dont get scratched)

and your hood should open with the locking mechanism.

go to a j-yard for trial/error (or i can take a pic of mine)
86 4x4 (and a 88 4x)

This may seem like a dumb question but have you tried rolling under it and trying to see where the cable is disconnected? maybe you could pull the cable from that approach?
sorry, I am not by my truck so I can't verify the exact placement of the cable.

are you sure that you disconnected the cable on the latch side and not inside the cab?

oh, and the get the grill off you take out the corner lights, and then there are a bunch of little clips that hold it on, you'll have to use needle nose pliers or a screwdriver to unclip then from the front, most of the time they are so brittle they break anyways, i think you can do it without opening the hood? I'll have to go look at my truck and sse if i can help

make sure you lube your latch with white grease now that it is open. I had a stuck latch a couple of years ago that smoothed out with some white grease.
