junkyard interior resto...

well, just got my 88 4x4 a month or two ago and ive started to get her the sea legs. went to the local salvage yard and picked up some 4runner seats, and other interior goodies.

2 seats, 2 armrests, and a pair of tailgate stays = $100.
new molded vinyl floor and jute = $110 (from custom auto interiors)
RAAMmat butyl sound deadener = free (leftover from a friends stereo install)
new head unit (kenwood eXcelon), ft and rear boston speakers = $240 (eBay)

theres a lot more to do so far, but at least the inside is habitable.

Looks real clean for an 88.

I'd love to hear how soundproof it is after all that work on the floorpan

thanks folks. theres a LOT more to eventually come. my brother and i own a shop in texas that eventually itll be getting some custom paint and custom bedliner. (and small dent repairs...hehe) but thats a ways away, since now i reside in vegas. but as far as the sound deadening goes...my buddy and i did his truck (which i think theres a pic of it in that gallery) and we took a SPL meter test before and after. we did an electric fan retrofit and RAAMmat the whole interior and there was like an 8dB drop in interior noise at highway speeds (i dont remember the exact number). we took readings before and after at different speeds, RPM's, gears, etc. and well, the stuff works. at idle, you cant even tell the truck is running.

also a good product to look into is Turtle Wax oxy interioe cleaner. those seats i got were filthy but a couple coats of the cleaner and all the dirt lifted, once its dry, its all easily vacuumed up. i was really suprised how well it worked.

i DID however have to add a bolt/nut to the seats where they mount in the front closest to the gear slector. the bench seat didnt have a mount there. the body of the truck retained the provision for a threaded hole but the threads werent there. that was a minor detail.

Looks great! My question is why did you go with the vynal floor and not carpet again? My 85 runner had that vynal and i tore it right out for carpet. My truck needs new carpet so im about to replace it. I just dont see why people are doing the vynal. Is there something im missing?

I got a 88 too. I'm still working on the interior. It looks like yours is farther along than mine. But it's looking good. I luv the 1st gen SR5 seats. They're more comfortable than the ones in my MR2.

I'm curious how the sound deadening works out. I was planning on ordering some industrial sound padding from MSC used to quiet heavy machinery. It's about 1/2" thick and much less expensive than the car stereo stuff.

4Runners in the bone yard are very rare around here. By any chance does anyone happen to have a set of the plastic plugs that go in the floor pan they'd like to part with? I need all 4. (The ones in the center of floor pan in front of each seat -- not the body bolt covers. )

well, if the truck was gonna be used solely as a commuter then i wuld have done carpet. but since ive got toys to haul around and play in the dirt in (which was the reason why i got the thing to begin with) then i figured the mud would come out a lot easier from the vinyl.
