I have searched the forums and the FSM. 1987 4runner 22RE

I removed the three screws and tried lowering the blower motor and fan out the bottom of the housing but I don't have enough room to remove it. I did see all the leaves and crap that are packed in the fan so now I really want to get it out and clean it.

I was replacing the gauge cluster and all ready have some of the dash apart.

How much more work is it to remove the fan assembly? Am i missing something not being able to just lower the fan and motor?

The blower barely moves any air and makes a loud humming, no wonder. If only toyotas could tell us the life they've had.

You should be able to remove the blower once you remove the three or four screws that hold it in place. You might need to wiggle it around a little, but it should come out. Maybe its packed so full of leaves and junk that its kind of stuck.

I was able to lower it maybe 3/4 of the way down but it does not have enough room to come out. I have tried loosing the blower housing but it won't budge because of the two mounting studs on top (3rd bolt is broken).

I don't want to disturb the heater core area in fear of causing more problems and headaches.

I will also try opening the recirculation flap and see if it gets me enough room to vaccum/wash.

I ended up letting the fan and motor hang down while I opened the recirculation flap and cut the grid. I then used a long brush on a wire, compressed air and a shop vac to clean out the fan. It worked pretty good and I didn't break anything else.

I was able to lower it about 7/8 of the way down, and at that point the fan itself is pliable enough that it bent a little and slipped out.

But now I can't get it back in. There is some insulating material on the floor that is a little in the way, but even if I smash that down the fan doesn't want to slip in.

Have others had difficulty in slipping the fan back into the housing? Any tricks?

I agree, it doesn't seem like enough room when you start. Once it's out, carpet pulled back (if you have any), kick panel removed, then the only thing is finding the correct angle. It will go back in. seems like the best way for me was to work it in to place so that I could get the side nearest the firewall in first. it takes a little finessing, but it works. Hope this helps... Yeah heat!!
