gearing for 3.0 v6
Hey there guys i have a couple of quick questions on my pickup. I have a 1988 toyota pickup with a 3.0L V6 . I just got done doing a total motor rebuild on it. I am running 35X12.5R15 with the stock 4.10s. I mostly go wheeling in the sand, and its my daily driver. I also have a 12 foot tandem enclosed trailer that i would like to pull. I have heard running 5.29s and now im thinking 4.88s... So if you guys can give me some advice i would appreciate it.

thats what i was more leaning towards but i just wanted to double check. Right now i pretty much have a four speed because i never use 5th. But my main mission is for it be good on the road.

If you are runnign 4:10's what are you looking to do a swap for millage or tourque to drive those large tires????

If manual tranny, I x2 Elvota's post
If automatic, you need 5.71 period. (Because you can't get anything lower) You will need an auxiliary tranny cooler too, but any ratio higher will have you shopping for a transmission in short order, tranny cooler or not. The reason is because the torque converter will never lock up and you'll just be shearing the hell out of the fluid.

yea i have a 5 spd and im mostly focusing on a daily driver and to pull my small enclosed trailer. But i still want good gearing for playing in the sand dunes.

I love my 5.29's and 35 x 12.5's a 80 mile a day daily driver 5 speed its the right combo
I ran the 4.10's for a week just to see what a dog it would run like and it's a night and day differance you will not be disipointed with the 5.29's

I'll never get why people advocate running undergeared so often ... Probably because they're thinking this is a domestic truck with unlimited cubic inches ... Our engines LIKE to be revved - better to gear too low than too high.
Anything higher than 5.29 for 35's adds wear and stress on the motor, clutch, tranny, and the diffs themselves.

I couldn't agree more. The only exception I suppose I could see is if you drive on flat roads at like 55MPH all the time and do like 5% of your driving around town.
We need to under gear to compensate for the drag and inertia these tires add. Returning to stock gearing does not mean stock performance in our case.

i'm running 4.88's and 33's, and i'ts great on trails, and better on the highway, i can pull hills easy now than compared to 4.10's. you can run up to 35's with 4.88's but would go any bigger

If you're towing a 12' trailer, you NEED the lower gearset. What is the trailer weight full? You'll have a REAL dog & risk a HG blowout towing too much weight without gearing down significantly.
