Can anyone post or link to a healthy sounding 22R/E?
Mine sounded fantastic until I had to do the HG job. Since then I've readjusted my valves twice and can't seem to remember what it should sound like. I don't remember noticing any valve noise prior to the job, and now it's all I hear. On youtube I can only find 22R/E engines that have issues....
I know some valve chatter is normal, but my engine only has 34k original miles on it... it shouldn't be too noisy?
So let's hear your 22Rs!

Okay, since nobody wants to post their 22Rs - can anyone just tell me if it's normal to have valve clatter when cold? The engine sounds great when warmed up but sounds like a diesel when cold....? Just want to know if I need to get back in there. Thx.

Here's a quick vid about how it sounds. It was late and it's dark so hard to tell where I have the phone mic, but as the knock/tick gets louder the mic is just above the valve cover. This is cold. When warm there is just about no knocking/ticking whatsoever:

Edit: Not sure how to embed that...

make sure your valve cover isn't too tight, only 9ft lbs, or finger tight then a quarter to half turn. to check ,start it up,back the valve cover bolts of a little at a time,if the noise goes away, easy fix. otherwise go through the valves again, takes nothing but time.

Thanks. I'll check it out. Would the chatter go away once it warms up if this was the issue? I'll try to post a video of it idling warm in a bit, but it makes a huge difference.

Wow they really do sound like typewriters... was that warm or cold? That's about what mine sounds like cold. Thanks a bunch for posting that. How many miles, when was last valve adjustment?

That video was taken back when that motor barely had 1000 miles on it. I had just adjusted the valves the day before I took that video.
