22RE injectors

does anyone know if there is a difference in the injectors from a '87 to '94 22re? are they all interchangeable?

some of the older ones have a different plug. other than that i have no idea if there's a difference

There are differences.

One very important one being the resistance.

Later trucks use a "saturated" type injector driver and require a "high" impedance injector around 12 to 14 ohms.

A lot of earlier ones use "peak and hold" drivers and use "low" impedance ijectors around 2 to 4 ohms.

If you substitute "low" impedance injectors for "high" impedance injectors it will fool you and start right up. then after a minute or so it will shut off because you just fried your ECM

so I have a question after searching and finding this thread. So I bought a wiring harness. Was told it's an 87. But it is an 88... I wil be using a 87 ecu in my truck. I have 87 injectors... Would there be anything wrong with it if I just switch the plugs to the 87 plugs? Or is there more to it then that?

Gonna bring this thread back a little...

From what I understand, all 85-88 injectors are low impedance. But they changed something on the injector in 88 and gave it a different plug. What was the change? Is there any reason why I couldn't use a 85-87 injector with an 88 ecu?

The picture in post #4 that shows type "C" injectors from 85-87 is not correct. About mid 1988 and actually some sources say that it was August of 1988, Toyota changed the type of injectors that were in the 22-re. So the correct date should be 85- 88.5 or 88.7. Before this date the injectors were low impedence with a solenoid resistor in the injector circuit to lower the current. After this date Toyota went to high impedence injectors and deleted the solenoid resistor. The 88 ECU's are not interchangeable and you need to know which one you have ( requires a solenoid resistor or does not) before you fire it up. If it is the right one for the low impedence injectors you will have to aquire and wire in a solenoid resistor, because it is not part of the engine harness it is wired into the body harness on the passenger inner fender. If you have the other ECU you cannot use pre mid 88 injectors, you need to get the correct injectors and plugs and wire them into your harness.

I had installed a 88 22re motor in place of a 86 motor ,and made the mistake of changing the injector plugs to match the 88 injectors.The truck ran like it was only getting half the fuel it needed.

I talked to the folks at LCEngineering and they said that the 83-88 injectors are all 190cc 2.5ohm injectors. There shouldn't be any compatibility issues here. I just rebuilt my motor and have a complete set of good injectors with the 83-87 style plug. I don't want to spend a bunch more money on 88 style injectors so I'm going to give it a shot and just solder on the 83-87 style plugs on my 88 harness. I'll post my results, good or bad.

But they also show a square plug similar to the 83 - 87 plug, square but with this: Square corners electrical socket
on injector.

Type D, 12.5 Ohm


Then in 88 it went to a rounded plug: Rounded corners electrical socket
on injector.

Type E, 2.5 Ohm 1988

So as Hadmatt54 states that in 88 sometime or for 89 to 95, they had high impedance injectors. He definitely knows more than I do. This is for the 89 to 95 engines from LC: Rounded corners electrical socket

Type F, 12.5 Ohm 1989-1995

If you have an 88, it would help to know which injectors you have, the low impedance or the high impedance injectors. Thanks for that info, Hadmatt. When I do my 88, I now know i need to figure that out.

Sweet!! Twice the gas mileage!

I swapped the plugs and went for a 20 minute drive and everything went great!! I talked to the guys at the toyota dealership and the parts guy was saying that sometimes the plugs and part numbers change because of a change in the supplier... he was assuming that was why the exact same fuel injector has a different plug.

i recently purchased an engine from a salvage yard for my 87 4 runner, that they say came out of an 87 pick up but when i get home i notice that all the injector plugs are diffrent, can any one please shed some light on if the harness are diffrent ?

Injector Recomendations.

I have an 86 22RE stage 3,build in the works, any advice on injectors?

ii took everything off an 85 4Runner, had it all rebuilt and built up and stuffed it under a 48 Willys CJ2A.

im running it with SDS, no cat, no smog, header, clean and mean.

I know a stage 3 build won’t run on the stock Toyota computer, basis that, I’m guessing I could use an injector upgrade.

Fuel injector recommendation.

looking for advice on which injectors to use on a 1985 22RE, stage 3 torquer rebuild? I’m running an SDS fuel injection computer.
