painting the undercarriage

I may soon be the proud owner of an 1984 pickup. Since I work in a paint store, Sherwin Williams, I was fantasizing I could clean and degrease the undercarriage and give it a fresh coat of Raven Black colored Sher-Kem High gloss industrial finish, with a catalyst for a harder finish.

What do you guys think? Any advice for undercarriage painting? Anything I should or should NOT paint?

im gonna be doing the same thing come late spring, im just gonna use por-15 on the whole frame, then the underside of the bed is getting spray rustoleum ill prolly even do the rear axle, very carefully tho, then im doin the bottom 1/4 of the body with por15, then a lil sanding, and then herculiner. followed by a full herculined bed...

ps...as a painter, and a someone who previously worked for two paint stores....i hate sherwin williams paint.

As a SW employee for almost 3 years now, SW is the best

I've done side by side comparisons with our paints vs others, Diamond Vogel, Dunn Edwards, Kwal.. ours is still the best

Hey, I know exactly where they start rusting. When you come to pick it up, I'll show you...

I just finished undercoating my runner's new bed tonight... Just need to weld it on now.

if you say so, but ive been painting for 6 years, 4 with a contractor and the last two privately, ontop of working for both sears in tools and paint for 1.5 years and lowes in paint for 2 years, im not repping their paint, cuz to be honest i dont like theirs either, but i do know paint....im not saying SW is the worst, but i wouldnt call it a clear cut winner either.

and for more on the painting of the frame of the truck, make sure do a real good job at the far rear, it seems as tho that is where most of my rust is and that is where im gonna break out the DA and maybe even pick up a sandblaster

I'm doing my 82 when the body work is done.
POR 15 on the frame with chassis coat black on top.
POR 15 in the cab and either chassis coat black or sterling silver. Then Herculiner on the floors.

I just got done a few weeks ago doing under the bed on my 85. I hosed it down with purple power and pressure washed the crap out of the underside of the bed. Any areas that showed factory primer or surface rust where sanded and repainted. Then I undercoated the crap out of the under side of the fenders and bed floor with Transtar rubberized undercoat taking care not to get it on the frame or anything else. I want the underside of my truck to look Barrett Jackson clean when its all done

I even got anal and sand blasted the mud flap brackets and repainted them with zinc chromate and painted them black.

I still have to address the frame and the cab, lucky my truck has always been in CA so its nice and dry. I'm also planning to spray all the internal parts of the frame with Wax Oly

What is wax oly? Internet seach didn't turn up anything...

I always sand down the rust then rustoluem primer and then rustoluem paint everything down. Seems to be a pretty hard finish and it stops rust on my vehicles.

SW the best what you been smoking. anyways Sher-Kem is an enamel why not go with a urethane, they last longer and are more durable. either way just make sure its prepped right you should probably seal it too with an epoxy if you take it to metal..

Just my opinion, you may disagree, but I think a high gloss would look tacky...
