It is running a little rough and I have it down at the local shop having it completely tuned . I was just wondering if anyone knows of any products that could smooth out this old engine? Sea foam ,mystery oil, lucas? What has worked for you and is there anything new I should try? I just want to get it running good enough to wheel and maybe make it last a little while longer. Ant suggetions on some good products? Thanks Miles

Getting it tuned will make it a lot better if anything needed adjustment. What exactly are they doing to tune it? Make sure they adjust the ignition timing and the valves. Have them check the timing chain guides when they adjust the valves.

there's plenty of big threads for sea foam in these forums, in response to the sludge problems in the 22RE. i have not used it, and am hoping that a diet of good synthetic oil will keep me out of the sludge. and second supernerd, a tune up with wires/plugs/distributor/timing goes a long way. i dont know anything about carbs...

If 22RE; plugs (only toyota) wires, cap n rotor, fluids, timing, valves.
If 22R (IIRC you could still get a 22r in 84), add to the above list a full carb rebuild.

Bg makes a product called quick clean, that really works, you put it in your oil before you change it and run it for 15 minutes, then change the oil, my oil was still clean for about 1k miles, looked like i just put it in. Ive had good results with restore engine stuff, and seafoam through the brake booster, it will help idle, and response.

How or where do you run seafoam through the engine of an 84 carbed yota? Pour it straight into the carb? I also want to out it in my 97 4runner but am not sure where to put it. I need pictures.......

Warm up engine really good, pour about half a can of seafoam right down the throat and killing the motor(hopefully). Wait at least 20 mins then restart and make sure nobody is watching. This procedure works best at night. pour the other half into the oil and run it for a few hundres miles then change your oil . Castrol gtx works great in 22r motor. prob want 10w40 too since summer is approaching

So pour it straight into the carb, let it choke the motr untill it cuts off then wait 15 minutes and start it back up? Thats it?

Pour it into the carb while revving the engine to about 2000 RPMs. Let it choke and stall, but do not pour too much in at once or you will hydrolock the engine and possibly break something, like a connecting rod. Wait about 15 minutes and start it. Once it starts, rev the engine to about 2000-2500 RPMs for a few minutes to clear it out.

After everything is tuned, and "Italian tuneup" might make a little difference in how it runs. To do that, let it warm up and drive it around at about 5000 RPMs for a minute or two. Up a slight hill is best, because you will have to open the throttle more. A few times that my truck did not seem to be running as good as it should, I have done this and it has made a difference. By the way, I have no idea why it is called an "Italian tuneup."

What ive done is dumped it in the carb and kept the truck alive till i was done dumping it in, let it sit for 10 minutes and then start it and drive it around a while... On your newer truck your gonna wanna do it off a brake booster line, the thick vaccum line that comes off of the brake booster...
