Dual Case Question
Yea...Im sure this has been ask 1,000 times. But I've tried to search and cant come up with anything. But here is where Im at. When i got my "new" 85 truck i had to put a trans in it. Well i found me a trans and picked it up over the weekend. So now i will have a spare trans and transfer case. I have been looking at doing dual cases, just because the low isn't low enough for me. Now im not buidling some crazy rock crawler, but I do wanna be able to crawl around. I have been lookin around and saw where guys are running dual stock cases?? I will have another case sittin in the garage! So can i just get the adapter plate and do it that way? Or is it better to go with the 4.7's? Id love to have the 4.70 but if i can do this for a whole lot less...then why not!? Also what all has to be done to run dual cases? Adapter plate, front drive shaft, speedo cable extender? Im some what of a newb but i know what i want lol, just need some direction from some of the "pros"

4.7 gears are cheaper in the long run (really surprised this didn't show in your search, yep 1000x's )
You don't need a new crossmember or drive shaft work, however I think 4.7's in a single case limit you.
Too slow in low range at times you need to go a little fast.
I have a dual 2.28 and 4.7 in rear case. It is great, currently running dual 2.28's and love it
A lot more options than a single 4.7 case, almost to the point of toying with the idea of selling my 4.7 case but like the idea of a spare....

Oh single 4.7 case, I thought he was considering 2.28 and 4.7 dual case. Ya I wouldnt go single 4.7 case, It will suck backing up in super snail mode, or being in between 4th gear low and 1st gear high, unless you have stock axle gears and 38's then it would be better until you break something else
Well have to get that search thingy fixed uh..

Well I don't want a 4.7 single case, was really just wondering what all I needed to do dual stock cases. Cause I have 2 stock cases, one in the truck and then a spare.

longer front driveline, shorter rear driveline, move tranny crossmember back, dual adapter from marlin/tg/inch worm etc..., front section of second t case and gears, 2 shifters, cut hole in cab floor, shift boots, gear oil, grey rtv, bench seat would not work in my 80 when i did mine.

i just finished my duals yesterday. i did the 4.7 trail gear kit in the rear case and used a trail gear adapter plate. i have never done this before and had no help the instructions are very simple to follow. i also got the trail gear crossmember with the crawler tcase mounts. i also lenghthen the front shaft and used the trail gear chromoly long spine and used schdl40 tubing and clearanced the cv and got 6in more drop. on my 4runner i had to use a cv on the rear also and clearanced it the same and use the same tubing and shortened it. i started with asingle 4.7 case and there wasnt enough gear options and was spinning rear stock shafts into. dual 2.28's will do you plenty just build your shafts and get the crossmember and mounts and take your time on the build if you have any ?'s i'll be glad to help
