22r smoking after head job!!!!

So I have an 85 longed 22r, 5spd, and it's 2wd(that part I'm debating on an SAS). Anyhow, I did a head job a few years back to replace the valve stem seals. Once I had everything put back together I fired it up and it smoked really bad, it was burning oil. It fouled my plugs in about 50 miles. I ran it about 100 miles like that till I put my little yota on the shelf and bought a...don't kill me...jeep cherokee(xj, hence the name)...anyways I want to get my yota back up and running so I can start my build. Any ideas? I've heard that if you seal up the top end of these motors it will blow he bottom end out. Any truths? Any help would ne much appreciated!

welcome to the forum. Sounds like some serious blow by. Do a compression test and a leakdown test to find out how the motor is really doping and get back to us.

Thanks man! I did a compression test when I parked it. Got 149 153 150 and 145...so good compression. Can the oil rings go out by themselves? Kinda weird situation lol.

your numbers are on the low end for the fsm. Looking at 142-171psi from the fsm so you're still in spec. Are you using a lighter weight oil? Also could the build up in the exhaust caused this? You have a couple options here. Either figure out the problem (most likely blow by) and fix it (rebuild) Or just say screw it, pull the motor, rebuild it and have the confidence it is running right for the next 200,000 miles. You're Already half way past a rebuild with your head the bottom end would be the next step.

I'm thinking a rebuild is in order anyways...i have the jeep as a DD, but I love my Toyota...seeing as gas is sky rocketing, the yota looks better and better everyday lol. I'll update when I start the rebuild and post my findings...thanks for you help!

So update...I got truck fired up for the first time in 3yrs...found out my clutch doesn't work, master was empty, maybe it need to be bled? I was able to coast out the drive way and drive it around the block. It has a miss at like 1500-2000 rpm, after that it cleans up. It blows smoke everywhere....I have to drive it to my house and pull the engine to rebuild it.

Haven't tried readjusting the valves yet...I know that wouldn't help the smoke much, but maybe the missing right? Ill have to try that next, thanks for the hint...
