Not without modification/fab work.

Is it 2wd or 4wd? 2wd will swap (I did a 87 to 83 swap), 4wd will not as suspension system is different between 81 and 86

But the '86 has the IFS steering box, 2wd or 4wd, so he would need to weld it onto the frame, correct? I mean I know it will swap, but it won't be a "bolt-on" fit, he will need to do some fab work.

According to the parts catalog, 81-88 2wd trucks use the same steering box.
and the 86-88 4wd use a different one.
The only problem I ran into swapping the power steering from an 87 2wd to 83 2wd, is that the manual steering shaft is a little bit long

Ok cool, that would be nice! Yeah, I think even in some of the first gen trucks, the steering shaft is different for power steering/non power steering.

My guess is that the 81-88 being the same is because even the first gen 2wd's had IFS? But going from any 2wd with power steering to a first gen 4wd without would be an issue? As in not a direct bolt on swap. But if you've done it already, you know more than me!

The power steering setup will work no problem, MINUS the steering gear.

You would either need to A. get a new steering gear or B. switch to crossover steering and use the IFS steering box.

The steering shaft is also a different length, but the slip joint in the shaft should take up enough play. If not, just get a used steering shaft from the same truck.

Can you use a power steering setup out of an 89-95 Toyota on an 83 with high steering? I'm assuming it shouldn't be a problem just looking for some verifacation thanks

what's up everyone new to yota tech

ps all pro and trail gear both sell a bolt on and weld on bracket for the ifs box, but it just as easy to make your own
