Add your location to your profile or signature so people can direct you to local sources...Craigslist.org works too

Marlin Crawler and a few other vendors have them. Not the cheapest solution but Marlin upgrades some of the internals for reliability.

I have a 79 4x4 with a 22R and 4 spd.

Is there a direct drop in 5spd that will work for me?

Yeah, One from a 81to 83 will drop in. That would be an L50 oran L52. bUT They are a lot weaker than your 4spd.

Marlin upgrades those 5 speeds for extra strength but I don't know if that big of an investment is worth it on an old truck. Do you want the OD for the highway? Sometimes just getting taller tires will slow your RPM's down enough as long as you can get up a long grade

I don't think it is a direct bolt in, the 4 spds are 20.75" long and 5 speeds are 25.25" long...driveshaft changes

It was for me but you have to get the correct adapter that goes between the tranny and t-case. They are different lengths. I can measure both adapters just to make sure.
