As far as i've understood it, if you have a solid front axle, the front and rear are interchangable. Independent front diffs are 7.5 inch and won't work in the rear axle.

front and rear are both 8" but that doesn't mean they spin in the same when in drive. i would think that the thirds were setup independently for front or rear. if you put a front in a rear, it's like going in reverse. i have searched alot and i know that much. i just need to know how to tell if it's a front or rear. you try searching what i said and you'll know what i mean.

They're same Toyota never reverse cut the front gears, the gears are strong enough. Little different story with high pinion but you don't run a HP outback anyway.
