Im looking for a new air compressor, I know I want at least a 15 gallon oil lubed pump, 120v preferably a stand up tank. Does anyone know anything about Harbor Freight Tools?

Id really like to find a belt drive but for all the more Im going to use it I dont want to spend the $$ for a new one, my price range is around $200 to $250, Ive been looking on CL for a used one with no luck too. Let me know what you think about the HF tools, they have a retail store outside of DC about an hour from me, I may run down there and pick one up if you guys dont think they are crap!

One thing about the C. H. compressors are parts, I know I could buy a new piston for it in a few years if I need it, Ive never heard of the other company but the price and specs look great!

i would only buy tools from harbor that i would only use once or twice, never anything that would get used every weekend for hours at a time. everything they sell is made in china so not much quality there.

when i bought my small compressor i read mixed reviews on the c/h as well

I ended up buying one of the C.H. 15 gallon oil lubed compressors tonight...Its still in the box in my garage... Ive done a lot of reading over the last few days and hope its OK, the H.F. compressor looks great on paper, but I read a lot about them online this evening and was not impressed, the CH I know I can buy a new piston and ring for 6 years from now if need be,the nice thing about the oil lubed pumps is that if you maintain them, the technically should last for ever!! We shall see, I snagged mine for 180 + tax new in the box with a year warranty, Im not 100% sold on it yet because its still in the box I did check Lowes, Home Depot and Sears, none of theirs in this size are oil lubed, the last 2 Ive owned, one was a Sears, the other was a Task Force from Lowes, they both were maint free, and both wore out and would not build enough pressure to shut off after a summer of use, Ill admit, I ran the crap out of them from roofing to building the 2 story garage but in my opinion the oilless pumps dont hold up! Its a shame that the belt drive compressors are so expensive!

well i did my homework on air compressors harbor freight is CHINESE FOR SUX
OK FOR STUFF YOU WILL use maybe a few times i had a heat gun catch fire a belt sander the motor smoked up a body hammer set the handle smashed and cracked i think a good air compressor will run you 500 to 1000 i use mine daily its my job and i actually built it from parts online i bought the pump from northern tool .com its a 10 hp 2 stage then i bought a tank and a 5 hp motor 1100 rpm and a square d pressure switch it took about a week to wire and set it up but man doesthis thing compress air
made a box to cover it so its quiet rubber pads so no shaking and its a 2 stage make 150 psi 10 years its been running daily chang the oil every 5 mos drain it weeky it cost me about $850 in parts not bad considering a 100 gal 2 stage will go for 2 grand !!

Yeah, I looked at some of the 30 to 60 gallon belt drives but for a home shop I talked myself out of spending the extra $$, I run air ratches, impact guns, framing nailers, grease gun etc but only during projects not every day, I hope it holds up, it seems to be really well built, it has all copper lines from the iron compressor to the tank and switch, and a nice cooling fan, its a direct drive so its a little louder than a belt drive but it built 125 psi quick!!

Just remember the oil gets in the lines, so you need a filter/trap if you're going to be spraying paint, etc. (IMHO, this is actually a good thing for the tools you listed, as you don't have to worry about oiling them as much)

Good call, Ill have to get an inline filter, I have a drier somewhere that I bought the last time I sprayed a car, that was years ago and I used my dads old school Craftsman 30gallon oil free, it did OK, he burned it up running one of my air grinders, it actually cooked the piston!!
