Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra: How to Install/Program HomeLink
Link your Toyota truck to your garage door opener using the HomeLink Wireless Control System. Here's how.
This article applies to the Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra (1996-2015).
The HomeLink Wireless Control System offers Toyota owners efficiency and convenience when it comes to opening a home garage door. The way the system works is simple: You pair the system with your garage door opener, and then press a button inside your truck whenever you wish to access your garage door (e.g., open or close it). The programming procedure takes just moments to complete, and once it's done, you won't need to program the system again – unless you need to pair an alternative garage door opener or other device.
Materials Needed
- Garage door opener
- X-Acto knife
Step 1 – Mount the hardware
Mount the HomeLink housing and module, which came with your kit, inside the visor. Start by making five holes within the fabric along the top of your visor (this is to accommodate the three buttons and two end latching pins on HomeLink) using an X-Acto knife. The black wire is the ground and the white wire is the 12 volt. Power up the HomeLink via your map light or other power source.
Note
If you purchased a visor with HomeLink pre-installed, you won't need to cut any holes in the fabric, as this will already be done. However, you will still need to wire it up via the map light.
Pro Tip
Typically speaking, HomeLink is considered a factory install. Therefore, it's highly recommended that you work extremely slowly, as it may be impossible to correct any mistakes.
Step 2 – Start the programming procedure
Simultaneously press and hold buttons #1 and #3 on your HomeLink system together for approximately 20 seconds or until the red light (located on the actual system, near the three buttons) begins blinking.
Step 3 – Grab your garage door opener
Begin pairing your garage door opener to HomeLink by simultaneously pressing and holding buttons #1 and #2 on BOTH your garage door opener and HomeLink. Do so for about 20 seconds or until the red light on your system starts to blink rapidly; it might start off by blinking slowly, so give it some time. The programming procedure is now complete.
However, if your garage door system has a 'learn' switch on it, you will need to flip that switch on, and then (within 30 seconds) get back inside your truck and repeat the above instructions (Step 3) to pair your garage door opener with HomeLink.
