Description:
complete ground up rebuild of my 1989 4Runner 22RE motor / engine to make it as bulletproof as possible. I'm hoping to drive this truck as my daily driver for the next 15 years and am expecting to get 500,000 miles out of it.

I thought I only needed to replace the head gasket at first, possibly the timing chain. When I took off the oil pan to get the broken plastic timing guides, I found the trust washers and realized I would need a total rebuild. Engine in the photo is out of an '83 Toyota Celica with the domed pistons

Gotta love taking a computer desk and turning it into a work station in your living room, but I don't currently have a garage, and needed a good spot to work.

Image of the LCE Oil Crank Scraper installed. I'm running a separate oil cooler, and remote dual ford 3001 filter set up on the rig. I'm estimating she will take 7-8 quarts of Royal Purple to fill her up, and with the adjustable oil pressure bypass, high oiling rocker arms, HD oil pump, and cooler, I figured a crank scraper would help keep the oil from foaming in the pan, and ensure that the pick up was always submerged. It's normally a racing guy thing to keep extra weight off your rotating assembly, but I got it to keep my oil where it's supposed to be.

Worn through timing chain cover. The scary thing is that I didn't have a dual row chain....the two very different distinct wear lines are from the thrust bearings coming out and the crank had 1/4" of play front to back in it! That's what ultimately trashed the block.

Close up shot of the Ultra Grey silicone around the front timing cover area. (yeah, I copper coated my head gasket...I know some don't, but I do.)

Sometimes you've got to work with what you've got...and all I had was some ratcheting straps.

Installing the long block by myself in the gravel drive. Ratcheting Straps helped me "level" or angle the engine correctly on the way in.

Waiting to get the intake in....Using a K&N for the first 500 miles of break-in oil, then switching to a remote oil cooler with 2 3001 large capacity Ford Oil Filters. Clean Cool Oil = Very long engine life.

Almost finished with the install. Just a few more vac. lines to hook up and hoses to swap out.

Relocated the VSV Vacuum Switches to the Firewall instead of on top of the Valve cover. I had to extend the wiring, but it really helped clean up the top of the motor.
