newb Tire size question, 225s or 31s stock?
Quick newb question:
I just picked up a new-to-me '91 4Runner SR5 6 cylinder 4x4. The odometer reads 305xxx, but the engine runs like a champ. Very clean for the year. I enjoy the heck out of so far. I talked to the dealer and found out the previous owner had the HG recall done back in '01. I have already scheduled to have the steering rod relay recall done next week.
My question is: The door jamb sticker listing tire pressure makes note of a 225/75 tire size. But my owners manual mentions that the 3VZ-E engine (which I have) uses a 31x10.5 tire. My truck is equipped with a 31x10.5. Up to this point I thought the previous owner upgraded the tire size, due to my seeing 225/75 in the door jamb. But after reading the manual, I'm starting to think my truck came with the 31s. I guess I'm wondering why there is a disrepancy between what is listed on the door jamb and what is printed in the manual.
It's not a huge deal, but I'd like to know so I can calculate mpg and see if my odometer is actually correct.
Any comments appreciated.
Thanks.

My '94 has the same 225/75 info on the door jamb, but it was bought new with 31's. Not sure how you could ever know for sure. I'd bet it came with 31's since it's an SR5 but I've been wrong before. What kind of gearing do you have?

The 31's is a manf. option. I also have a 95 runner, and it came with 31". but keep in mind, I bought it used so I belive the person I got it from put them on as from the dealer they come with 225/75r

I have a '94 xtracap p/u that has 31x10.50s; it's completely stock & my speedo is actually a couple of mph's FAST, if you can believe that....

Well I have been researching this issue and I am not sure either. My 4Runner also says 225/75 on the door plate but has 31's on it. I bought it used so I don't really know for sure...but it seems to be a common occurance.
What I did find interesting though is that the other codes in the door jam will tell you what type of gears/tranny/# of pinions/third member you have. My 4runner says G144/A340H which means I have an 8" ring gear, 4.875 gears, 4 pinions in the carrier, and the auto tranny.
Like I said before my plate also says factory tire size of 225/75, but if I have 4.88 gears wouldn't that be insane with P225's? I wonder what Toyota was thinking. My truck is slow as a turtle now with the 31's, and it is my understanding that going to a smaller tire would increase my acceleration, but decrease my top end. I cannot figure out how with 4.88s and 31's my truck is so slow. Most vehicles that have 4.88 would normally have a 35" + tire.

I have 31s on my 95 pickup and my speedo is slow, seems close at low speeds but my 60-70 its 7 or 8 off.
My odometer seems to not jive with mile markers either. i wonder if that makes my miles read fast or slow?

Although your runner has quite a few kilometers on it, try this trick: look at the spare tire and see whats on there. If its still the original spare, itll be whatever size came with the truck. I've got an untouched dueler hanging under there. Too bad my rear bumper is a little mangled and I can't even get the rod in there to lower the tire. When I get a flat, I'm just gonna hope I can get a hacksaw in there... :/

For 2nd gen. Autos. The 31" tires come with 4:88's while the 225's come with 4:56. The spare is really the best way to tell which tire your truck came with. If the rod goes straight in from the bumper then your's came with 225's. If it has to go in at an angle then you have 31's. This is according to my manual. The tire sticker on the door jab means nothing.
