I recently pickedup a 92 Land Cruiser and have noticed that the tranny has a pretty loud "clunk" when I slow down and it down shifts (automatic). I know that this is typical of older Hondas but what about Toyotas? It looks like it's been open for some work but I am unsure of what. Any ideas?

 

I have a friend that just picked up a 92 FJ-80 and he said his had "slack" in the tranny when he put it in gear. It turned out that the bearings/seals in the transfer case were shot, the bearings in the front wheels were shot and the axle on the passenger side had stripped slines and the hub was also stripped. Oh and needed new U-joints.

I thought that he had to be joking or the tranny shop was putting a royal screw job on him. Well I saw the stuff and yep it was trashed. Best I can figure is that the people that had it towed it behind a motorhome and did zero maintenance on the drive train.

Now I'm not saying this is all true with yours but I would check out the transfer and the u-joints then work up from there. You have the 3FE engine right? It's a 4.0L.

I'm just getting to know Cruisers. Mine is a 96 FZJ-80 and the engines are different in the FJ-80's so I'm only going on what little I have seen of my friends......

And yes. It's the slug of a 4.0 that they used in 91 - 92.
