Rear speakers for a 1st Gen

So in continuing my quest for a decent stereo on the cheap for my '86 I am looking for some rear fill speakers or more specifically a place to put them. I have been giving this some thought and I am wondering if anyone has come up with some creative solutions for this.

I want to mount the speakers up, possibly on the roll bar. For this they would need to be small and enclosed, but I also need them to be big enough to fill in the canyon of sound missing between my 10" sub and 3 1/2" dash speakers.

I would love 6x9's, but I am thinking that I would lose all rear view.

long ago I had a set of plastic enclosed speakers that I could have mounted there. The only things I can find like that seem really cheap(even for me) or are marine speakers(which I am not opposed to)

The third thing I can think of would be a Jeep type "sound bar," does anyone know of one of these that will fit in a yota?

thoughts?
Thanks
-Sean

sorry if this info is already there, but I couldn't find anything as I searched.

soundstage

Greg, how is your rear soundstage with using the stock locations. I was thinking about mounting them elsewhere for better sound, but if that works good it is certainly easier. Also what type of top are you running there, is it commercially available??

My sub mmm... sometimes it's bolted in, but after i put the cobalt amp in, the speakers sound so good i haven't put it back in yet....
In the pic im running a Kayline top who is now owned by www.specialtytopco.com . Of course sound is best when the hardtop is on, but still sounds good with the softtop. (but as we all know, the softtop is only up when it's raining ).

How is the rear soundstage? That really depends on the amp you are using.
If using the stock deck, the front speakers will overpower it.
With a 25x2 amp, the rear speakers can overpower the front speakers running of the HU.
With an amp rated slightly above the power level of the components, i can crank the gain so high (without distortion) that i cant hear the front speakers running off the HU (and it only gets louder if i fold the seats down! lol).

I will be installing some kick panels when Bumpin' gets them done, so again my front soundstage will overpower the rears no matter what.

Personally i have found, that with a nice sized amp, (ex 50x2 or more) the rear fill is great. Anything less and you dont get enough midbass or high clarity. The only time it sucks, is when running with the top off, but then, all you're going to hear is the front soundstage anyways. If you want alot of rear fill with the top off, you will have to mount the speaks the jeep way, OR, you can mount some 6x9's in the rear passenger pockets. That would work too.

Good luck!

rear speakers

I see this thread is old but here goes anyway-

Here is what I have done with my 6x8's -instead of putting them all the way in back. I didn't have to cut much and find I can hear them a lot better. (no amp)

The most important thing is to measure and cut carefully. Take off this panel first and you should have no problem seeing what I mean.

1st gen rear speakers

I forgot to mention you will have to relocate a rear window relay (not sure if that's what it is, but it a gray plastic box with wiring harness attached) It's on the driver's side opposite the speaker I have shown. I just tie wrapped it in place but I think it could (and should) be done better by drilling some new holes or making new brackets.

Somebody mounted 6x9s in the passenger area on mine. They sound good just running off the deck. The only downside I have seen is they're normally blocked when I have people back there. I don't have a pic of them specifically but you can see them here in the bottom corners:

Oh yeah, I know that. I just haven't done anything with the stereo yet because I've been doing all offroad mods. It's eventually gonna get components all the way around and subs mounted where your rear components are. I'm gonna do it right and insulate inside the side panels all the way back before I install that stuff.

thanks for the thoughts, my current set up is a set of enclosed Kicker 6.5 two ways. They are a little bulky, but I have them in the back and running off an old Jensen amp. Still running that '06 Scion deck and it sounds awesome.

I see in the pic that there are vent windows in the front doors. Put 8" speakers in there! I did it in mine. I used Memphis multi sync 8" component set. With a Memphis 55x2 amp on them, they rock. Plenty of room in these doors with vent windows.

Oh, y'all are talking about my truck . The PO told me that the passenger door had been replaced with a newer one. What he failed to tell me was the reason it was replaced was it had been flopped on that side . They did a terrible job fixing it and I'm slowly grinding out all the bondo and making it right.

I already have I think 6.5" JBLs in the front door (needing replacement.. the driver's one is blown bad). You can see it in the bottom corner of this pic (sorry, I keep forgetting to take good interior shots..):
