Mine are really rusted out, does anyone know where I could get some new ones? I called the local dealer and I was told they don't make/stock them anymore.

 

Probably cheaper to upgrade to rear discs.

 

You know I have been giving that some thought. I was hopeing to wait till I got some gears and a locker/ welded diff.

 

HIJACK:

Is this lever inside the drum supposed to move? It seems seized up and the only way I can get it to move is with a hammer. Its for the auto-adjust, right? My rear left wheel was dragging the brakes, so I poped off the drum and re-adjusted the drum to shoe clearance so there was more of a gap allowing the wheel to move freely. When I was doing this I noticed that this peice seem to be seized:




How do I remove this level so I can clean it and get it working again? My parking brake seems to no longer work because of this. I tried today but the hub seems to be in the way and the lever wouldn't slide off the pin at all, even after removing the clip that holds it in.

Ok, so the drum recently was sticking again, and I got it back to normal. Has anyone replaced the piece noted above? Looks like I'd need the lever and the pin (the bolt thing that the lever pivots on). I'm not sure how I would get the pin out of the backing plate.

 

Why would you need anything new? Just get the clip of and then take the triangle off, clean everything with sand paper, cover in grease and put back on. It is not a press fit or anything. It should just be sloppy on there so that the cable can pull it.

 

Good Point, but last time I was inspecting it, I recall taking the clip off and the triangle would not budge at all.

 

ya they get rusted right on there. They are soft and will bend. You just have to pry it off and clean it all up. I have done it on many a Toy. You have to take the drums off every year or so and grease everything up or they will stop working. Once you get it working you have to use it ALL THE TIME. It does not take long for them to stick again. Damn winter......

 

So back to this thread again...

My drums and pretty much everything back there are beginning to fall apart. I'd like to replace the backing plate and everything connected to it. Has anyone done this before? I would be able to replace the brake components fine, but not sure about pulling the axle etc and whats required. Anyone have a list of parts I would need? Since www.toyodiy.com lost its part diagrams I'm lost.

 

If you pull the 4 bolts on the back the whole axle and everything comes out or the axel tube. I have just swapped the whole thing with a good one from a donor truck. They are hard to find around the great white north. I am pretty sure that the backing plates are dealer only items and will cost a fortune.

Upgrading to rear discs will be loads cheaper than replacing the stock drums... if you haven't started buying all the replacement parts for your drums, it'll save you about $200 in the end to switch to discs. Just make sure to find calipers that work with the parking brake or you'll have to get a tcase brake to stay road legal (which is prohibitively expensive).

Ask me how I know. I'm about $400 in on my drum replacement, really regretting not going to discs. Dear lord is it ever hard for me to find backing plates from anywhere but the dealership. You're lucky because you're in the states, toyotapartszone.com should have the plates for about half what any dealership would want, they have the ones I need for mine, but they don't ship to Canada. Trying to work on some other options for getting them myself, but this "parking brake cable replacement" job has snowballed for me every step of the way.
