New here and I have a question on my timing

Hi guys, I'm new to this place. I'm on my 4th Toyota and my 3rd 93 pickup. Anyway, I just got this one and was happy with my other 2, but mother nature took one and a Dodge Ram took the other.

My question is on my timing. I've changed my plugs, wires, dis cap, and rotor, but it idles rpm wise rather low and my timing at the distributor is turned all the way up and it misses. Diving wise it's fine except at 45mph it hesitates, backing off of 70mph it fells like it just cuts out, and going up our large hilled drive way in first gear it hesitates. I thought it maybe the o2-sensor before cause my exhaust smelled rich, but now I'm a little miffed. I've got the 22re and the extended cab version this time around. It's nice.

I figured I'd have problems to fix and have already done a lot to to it. It was overheating and hat was easy it was the fan clutch. I've also changed out the radiator cause it just looked nasty. Preventitive maintainance you know. Put a K&N cold air kit on and a Flowmaster Hush II muffler. I'm not a lead foot and use it for getting me to band jobs all over Tennessee. The main reason for the upgrades, for me, is better fuel economy. The hp does help for carrying the gear, but that's just an added bonus.

You need to set the timing @ 5 degrees BTDC for the 22re. If your idle is low, adjust it via the idle air adjustment screw on top of the throttle body. Be sure to jumper the diagnostic code wire before you check the timing to bypass the ECU, otherwise you'll show a very high advance! You may possibly have a TPS mis-adjusted;although that seems to be more prevalent with the 3vze. There are several good threads on here about TPS; do a search. Those are the things I"d start with in that order. Good Luck!

Are you setting the timing with a light or just turning it until it feels like its running better?

As already mentioned the idle can be adjusted with the idle screw, and the timing is 5 degrees btdc with a timing light and the diagnostic connector shorted out...

Well with it set at 5 degrees BTDC rpms are at 200 and the exhaust smells rich. From what I've read on here it sounds like you guys are right. I'm going to clean the throttle body, the tcs, and ecu and get back toyou guys to let you know the results. Thanks just needed a second opinion.

200 rpms at idle? are you sure? it should be at like 750 (i forget the exact spec).

You do not adjust the idle with the timing! Refer to my post above, in that order.

All right. I set the distributor back to where it was, cleaned the throttle body, reset the computer, and cleaned the idler screws. Both had a lot of carbon and varnish. Runs great now. I guess the throttle body wasn't closing all the way, but after all of that the rpms are right at 900. I'll back that off a little bit more. It should be at 750 for 2x4 and 850 for 4x4. Thanks for the help guys. All I have left to do now is get some new belts put on and next spring get shocks.

So this is what I gathered from my reading on here. If the throttle body has to much carbon and varnish the plate doesn't close all the way and fools the tps and it retards the timing. That's why I was getting a miss and rich exhaust smell and why I thought I needed to advance the distributer and my rpms were sitting at 400 with it all the way up. So by cleaning the throttle body and idler screw of all the carbon and varnish it closes properly now and my timing is still a little advanced, but it doesn't miss any more and my rpms are not at 200-400 like before. Again thanks for the help. I'm very happy.

It's a straight through design like a glass pack except it has a baffel system. I'm impressed with it cause the exhaust flow is high like the cherry bomb I had on my last truck, but not as loud. It's no louder than the stock muffler was, but it does have a better exhaust note. Heck it was $30 including the installation and no tax.
