Since I have so much work to do to my 89 4runner, I'm considering removing the engine so it's easier to work on.

Average time it takes your Saturday afternoon mechanic to perform this job?

i did mine and its not fun took me a day to do it by my self

o and whos ever idea it was to run the tranny wireing right down the middle of the intake that was a great idea

 

can you take it out while leaving the transmission in the truck?i read some thing that told me to remove both at the same time.

 

Its Much Easier To Pull Both At The Same Time. That Way You Simply Disconnect The Essentials. The Harness Can Come Out From The Ecu Rather Than From The Engine Connectors. If Its Amanual Make Sure You Dont Forget The Slave Cyl. Hardest Part Would Be The Driveshafts In My Opinion.

 

I don't think there are any electrical things running back to the tranny, since my truck is a manual shift. Is this true?

took me 4 hours by myself. I left the tranny in the truck as the engine was going on a stand.

Agreed to the 500Ft of wiring.

 

Mine is a manual as well and there are wires that go to the tranny. I believe they are for the lights so you know when you're in 4x4. There are also wires that go to the O2 sensor coming from the same harness.

It took me about a day to remove my motor by myself. That was leaving the tranny in the truck. I could probably do it in at least half the time now that I've done it. I also removed one with the tranny still attached and didn't find it any easier.

The hardest parts were getting to the top two tranny bolts and labelling/removing/replacing the wirning harness. If you have to remove the intake anyway then do it before you remove the wiring. I was able to feed mine in and out through the intake but it was a major PITA.

a large extension , with a "swivel" socket on the end will take those 2 top tranny bolts out likidy split . unplug the harness at the computer and pull it threw the firewall .. I've done it in 2 hrs .. consistantly .

I have done it quite a # of times ... but 1 thing I have never done is "label" the wires .

Toyota makes there harnesses "to fit" what you do need to label is the vacumme lines .

I believe there is a wire going to the tranny for the speedo and 4x4 light as said and also the o2 sensor is back there just before the muffler.

 

4x4 in out light, neutral safety switch, backup lights.

 

1st time it took me 3 hours second time it was out in under an hour with the tranny

 

I have a 22re with an A340F automatic transmission. The factory service manual says to remove them together. It looks like there is hardly enough room to pull them both out together. Has anyone ever pulled a 22re with the A340F? Do you have to remove the front axle or lift the vehicle to get clearance?

 

Amazing..........I can barely change the oil in that amount of time!!

yes you can but i needed to use a come -a-long whne the engine was clear but the tranny wasnt its skooped it right up and then walla you have a 6ft hunk of metal on a hook ...ummmm
