Pc won't recognize any disk
My laptop went bust, don't know why and didn't have time to figure it out b/c I head to head out of town for a course. So I just took my PC, and now when I insert any cd or dvd into either drive it doesn't even "acknowledge" anything is there. The light on the drive comes on but it doesn't open the files. Or allow me to go to real player and open them myself. When I go to drive E or D, it doesn't open up any files, its like it doesn't even recognize the drive exists.
When I go to device manager it shows Matshia USB DVD/CDRWdevice, mitsumi cr-48x5te, and samsung DVD-ROM
I don't have my restore cd's with me, so that I can just restore everything. I went out and purchased an external driver and I can't get it to work either, it needs the driver disk in order for it to work. I tried to find a place to download the driver for it and couldn't find anything. Its a dynex slim USB cdrw/dvd combo drive model number: DX-CMBOSLM
Any suggestions or clues on how to porceed.
thanks

will it recognize a commercial CD?
sometimes, you maybe using a diff style burning. i had a user that used adaptec's floppy like burning utility.
only problem is that it used a non standard way and you need to install a special utility on another machine in order to read them.
so she's been backing up using this method and sure enough her HD died.
she thought she had backups and she was nearly crying when she told me she couldnt read any of her burned CDs. after a few moments, i asked her how she burned the media and told me what she used.
i d/led the util from adaptec's site and she was up and running on her spare machine.
lesson learned...

"Asks for a disk"?? Are you running Windows 98/ME? All CD/DVD drives in 2000/XP will work fine without a driver. If it's asking you for one, the problem isn't with the drive. Post back with which OS you're using. I had a similar problem with a computer running XP, and it turned out to be related to some CD burning software that was on the computer that was removed. IIRC, it was the DirectCD add-in that some CD-Burning programs install to where you can do a "drag-and-drop" burn.

I'm thinking virus or spyware. Since you're on the road, hit up Housecall - a free online scanner:

If you have a USB flash drive with you can make the external cd drive work. If you have access to a second computer that works. Copy the files from the install cd and onto the flash drive. Install the software from the flash drive onto your computer. It shouldn't require any drivers to install.
If that is doesn't work try DriverGuide.com. Setup an account and search for "DX-ECDRW200" Not sure if its the correct driver for your usb cd but it might work.

man I really hate computers. Laptop is a year old and is no good, and now the 2 yr old pc is giving me crap too. One of my collegues here suggested getting an external hard drive. So that is what I did, and then he transferred all the files on to it from his computer, and it works with mine now. So for now I'm set. Hopefully nothing else goes wrong untill I get back.
thanks for the help guys!
