Hi everyone,
I've got a sweet 1988 SR5 4runner. I was working on putting a clutch in it yesterday and I'm going back to working on it today, but I need to know if anyone else has come across this. The throwout bearing that came with my clutch kit is completely different from my stock one. It's just a bearing with no tabs or anything to hold it to the forks. Any insight would be great, THANKS.

Yeah, it sucks.

You have to change over the center part with the clips to the new bearing. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. (was a NAPA kit)

 

Don't know if you're talking about a V6, but my throw-out bearing (NAPA) for my V6 was different from the stock one, too. Looks different, but all of the crucial measurements are the same so it should work fine. Don't have to change anything over to make it work.

 

Should all fit the same, it just looks slightly different, I think the only part you actually have to take from the old throwout is the metal clip that holds the fork to it. Otherwise, it should fit fine.

 

Now, I starting to get frustrated and confused. I've got the 4 cylinder and the throwout bearing is making no sense. I've done several clutches before this just happens to be the first on a Toyota. Alright so, I've tried switching the center part of the bearing, but it doesn't fit. There is nothing to hold it to the part with the tabs. So, I went to the auto parts store to just find a different throwout bearing and they had the exact one that came with my kit. So, I ask if they have a different complete clutch kit, which they did, but that one came with the same bearing too. If someone could help explain what I have to do that would be awesome.

Hi again, I think I've figured out what's going on, but that doesn't help solve the problem. I think at some point someone put in a clutch kit that the release bearing and release bearing hub were one piece and not stock. Now, I need to find a company that makes the release bearing hub and bearing as one unit or I need to find a stock release bearing hub. If any body knows where I might be able to find either of these please let me know.

On the new release bearing there should be a single spring clip (like a wire attached to both sides of the bearing that goes around the hub) that will hold it onto the fork. You do not needs the 2 clips anymore. If it did not come with the spring clip then I would take it back and find one that does.

This is not the exact bearing but it is similar and you can see the clip. This is what you should be looking for.

I had to get a new hub at the dealership because mine was worn on the edges but could have been reused. I also got the new spring clips while i was at it. Had to order but it was only like 35 bucks. At the toyota dealership in OSHKOSH. I have the old hub that holds the bearing if your still looking or can't find one. Good luck.

 

Go to Toyota and get the right one. The same thing happend to me. There will be nothing worse then getting it back together and having problems. It is worth the extra money. You want the best bearing you can get so you never have a problem with it.

 

Sounds like the same problem I have. Do you have a 22re or 3.0 V6? Sound like you have the bearing from a 3.0 V6 in a 22RE truck which is what I have. My clutch kit came with a press-on bearing. Well, now I don't have the part that it presses on to or the correct mounting clips (not the wire you have, but 2 metal clips).

No way I am putting the old bearing back in mine. Now I think I may return the clutch for another one that does come with the press in part already inthe bearing. Then I have to go to Toyota to get the clips.

Not fun, but it needs to be right.
