1986 toyota pickup 4x4 sr5, 5spd, 22-re unknown mileage.

The truck wont start. I have tried many things and at one point it was starting and running for about 5 secs then dieing, then i tried this fuel pump check thing ( http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...shtml#FuelPump scroll down to the fuel pump tricks) and i think i screwed it up worse ( now that i looked at the site again i think i may have jumped the wrong connector and fried something, but i dont know what) because now it wont start at all, still turns over but wont start, and the fuel pump wont turn on. I know the pump is still good though because i hooked a wire to it from the battery so i could bypass everything and see if it was still good, and it is. I tried replacing the resistors in the fuse block and the resistor in the engine bay( passenger side one) and i replaced the in cab open relay above the ECU, all to no avail.... the check engine light still will not turn on when i turn the key to the on and start positions like it should, and the fuel pump is not turning on. Ive tried everything that i can think of.... please help me .

Did you check the fuses besides the resistors? A fuse will go 1st check both panels, the one under the hood and the one on the kick panel!
You blew a fuse! I doubt it's your fuel pump!

 

Replace your EFI relay. If you hooked up in reverse-polarity, you have fried it. It sits in the fuse block on the passenger-side of the engine compartment.

 

yep ive checked and rechecked all the fuses.

 

is that the big burgundy colored one?

 

Not sure of the colour on a 1st gen, but it is a larger 'fuse' type of box. If you pop the top of it, you will see a diode across two contacts. This is the relay that sends the signal to the computer that sends the signal to the fuel pump. No relay = no fuel pump = no start.

PS: I learned this when I hooked my battery up in reverse polarity. Fried the 80 amp and the EFI relay. Replaced them, hit the re-sets on a couple of relays, and I was back in business.

Sorry about the bumps, I'm out of town and connecting via the hotel wifi...waaaayyy better than dial up at home....
There are several relays that I had to re-set. One of them is under the dash, just over the pedal bracket. Looks like a little silver pot, with a re-set button. THere is another one in the right side kick panel, not certain about these locations for the 4 cyl.
4X4Lamm put me on to them about two years ago. If he doesn't chime in here, just PM him. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

 

i couldnt find a single reset button.. but i did figure out that there is no power getting to the ignition system... nothing at the coil/ignitor and nothing at the ign fuse on the fuse block..... im stumped...

 

This might sound like a retarded suggestion, but make sure you check all the fuses with a meter.

Sometimes they look perfectly fine but they're blown. I had one like that one time and I wasted like 2 hours until I found a blown fuse with the meter that looked good.

 

Did you replace the EFI relay and the 80 amp fuse?

 

Check your PM's...I have a diagram for you.

 

ok well i got it to run... i figured out there was 2 problems... one was a fuse that was blown but looked good still, and the other problem was the ignition is faulty, so we put a hot wire to the started and got the truck to start. thanks for the help guys

 

Which fuse was it?....80 amp???
