I have two door handles on one door - wtf?

I happened to notice today for the first time that my passenger side door has two door handles on the inside. One is forward, at the same place that the driver's side is, and the other is at the back of the door and right above the armrest. They both work, and look totally stock. Is this a 4Runner thing? What on earth would the purpose be?

The back one is so the people in the back seat can open the door and shove you out.

So the people in the backseat can get out. It is that way on all 1st gens.

its so someone sitting in the back seat can get out on their own. there's a foot pedal to release the passenger seat forward and then they reach the back handle that's closer.

Yup, was definatly cool to see.

Which reminds me, since we're all 1st genners here, can somebody point me to a write-up of how to take the top off?

Hah, never even thought of that. I rarely use the back seats in either of my vehicles to actually carry people. Lol, plus the cable is broken on the passenger seat, so backseat passengers are gonna have a hell of a time getting out anyway.

Steverock: I think the top comes off with 13 or 14 strokes of a 12mm socket...

However, I do have an original manual in my 88 with the instructions on how to put it back on. Maybe I should scan that and submit it.

If he goes off to work on his top on just what you gave him, he'll loose the rear wiper electrics and washer and herniate himself . Steverock, to what Rustbucket provided, add the fact that you disconnect the electric plug and washer hose from the driver's rear corner and get at least one more big dude to help The order of removing the bolts isn't that important, but there is a specific order when you reinstall it to ensure a tight seal. The stock manual has all that info

1. Remove all the trim pieces that cover the bolts holding the top on.
2. Disconnect wiper/washer in the rear corner recess.
3. Remove all bolts holding the top on.
4. Lift off top.

You should be able to do it without pics, yes?

Thanks for the help guys. Actually, my wiper is non-existant.

The trim pieces you speak of, are they the ones wrapping around the b pillar, or down the length of the topper to?

I think I shoud invest in an owners manual...
