I am getting a new trailer and with disc surge brakes. It has a 5 flat pin connector for a wiring harness. My 2001 4Runner SR5 4WD has a towing package and a wiring for a 4 flat pin connector. The 4 wires are for ground, Right signal and brake, Left signal and brake, and running lights. Going from a 4 flat to a 5 flat needs to accomodate for a free backing solenoid, so that when the truck is in reverse gear it will not actuate the brakes, hence "free backing". All the instructions say is to wire this 5th wire to your reverse lights circuit. Well, here's my question, I can attach it directly behind the reverse light, however, there are two wires going to the light, and I only have one wire to connect to either of the two. Is this sufficent, and the way it is supposed to be done? Has anyone done this before, if so how did you do it. Thanks!

 

What colour are the 2 wires, the wiring diagram for a 2001 only shows one wire for the reverse lights, a white with blue stripe. If you connect to that it should be live when the tranny is in reverse.

 

I didn't get a chance to look at the color of the wires before I buttoned it back up. But it would seem that there are two wires, alike a common household electrical light bulb. Do you have the wiring diagram that you could send me?

I would say you can take your power from there... If there are 2 wires there I would assume that one is a + and one is a - ..... Use a test light or volt meter to check to see which one gets power when you put it into reverse....
