CEL P0120 Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Malfunction

Did a quick search and found a thread a few months back but didn't want to bring an old post back...

From the thread, it sounds like a bad TPS... There was never a follow up so I was wondering if anyone here has had this code and if it was indeed the TPS? Also how long can I drive with this problem? Any issues? It just came on today. I plan on ordering it Monday so hopefully I should have it by Wednesday or so but I need to drive during the meantime.

I have done the ISR and deckplate mod a few months ago. Last week I just got a magnaflow suv exhaust with 2.5" piping from the cat back... After getting the exhaust I somehow managed a whooping 250 miles on my tank before the light came on... I usually only get 180-190. I wonder if these had something to do with the CEL.

Yeah i had this problem a while back funny thing is I just chnaged the TPS a couple weeks ago. Evan from Northridge was the cheapest around at 40 something dollars. The TPS made a HUGE difference in my performance considering now i wont stall when i floor it. Also it killed me on gas i was losing about 3-6 mpg depending how how bad it was and also how cold the day seemed. As it got colder the worst the stalling became. My suggestion is getit changed ASAP cause you will pay for it in gas. I did however wait pretty much about 8 months though i got really really lazy and at first it was only intermitten. In the summer it wasnt nearly as bad as it was when it got to december. Btw it is extremly easy to change no issues what so ever so good luck and hope this helps.

Thanks for the info bro... Glad to hear it's just the TPS that gave you the problem. My CEL went away without me deleting it so I'm guessing the TPS is beginning to go bad... I'll order it first thing tomorrow.

Other than the light, what were the signs it was going bad?

Nothing else, it was just the light. I have been getting crappy mpg though.

That code is likely the TPS beginning to go bad but as always it can be related to something else. You can test the TPS easy enough (using resistance on a multimeter) or just replace it, reset the ECU and see if the CEL comes back.

no problem man

Other signs are that you are usually off by at least a 100rpms at idle. mine was idling at 900 instaed of the consistent 700 i get nowadays. and when you floor it sometimes you will notice that nothing is happening. and ofcourse when you are on the highway and you try to pass someone you may feel a bit jerky because the shift points seem to be off.

I get about 13.5 mpg. I'll just go ahead and replace the sucker since I am at 91k already.

Huh, I get that at speeds over 70 and I get about 16mpg if I keep it under 70 mph.

Yeah my MPG sucks... I only got over 16 mpg once, the tank before the CEL... 17 mpg... I managed to pull 250 before the gas light came on.

Anyways, Evan@Northridge had one TPS left in stock and he will be sending it out tomorrow morning... Should be here by Wednesday... Will let you guys know how it goes.

Yeah, let us know how it goes. I have a Superlift Speedo corrector to install and after that if my mpg still sucks then I may try this based on if your results are good.
