What to expect with a 30,000 mile tune up

Hey fellas, I was wondering what I should expect to pay, and what they should do at the 30,000 mile marker. I am currently sitting at 29,900!!

Any input would be great, Oh by the way, the dealer wanted $468 for everything.

Screw that...way too much $$$.

They will probably replace the coolant, maybe change the plugs (doubt it though), new air filter, change oil and filter, rotate and balance tires, maybe an alignment, grease driveline, inspect everything. That's probably about it. Almost everything I just mentioned can be done in your driveway.

Don't pay them that much to do it!

CTB,

They told me that this was pretty important, plus my engine light came on (before I took it to the dealer, and it the oil was just changed). Did you have to do a 30,000 mile checkup?

Anyone else?

Have you pulled the code for the check engine light? Run by AutoZone and they should do it for you for free.

What all did they say would be done at the 30,000 mile tune-up? I hardly doubt it is worth almost $500 to be honest.

I forget everything they said, because I was kinda in a hurry this morning, but they said something about changing fluids, and doing something with the transmission. haha that's not very desriptive of me is it?

What do you mean pull the code for the check engine light?

They probably meant drain the tranny and put new fluid in, and possibly change your diff(s) and change the fluid. All of this is very easy - you should have no problem doing it.

Check engine light: there is obviously some sort of error that the computer has found, and it will store that problem as a code inside its memory. At AutoZone, or the dealer, or wherever, they can hook up a scanning tool (a small computer) which will read out what error code it is, and what problem is associated with that error code. Then, from there, you can figure out what steps you need to take to fix the problem.

Hopefully that all makes sense...

I am at my 30k. Actually a little over, I am waiting for my tax refund to pay for it. Anyway, I agree with what has been said above about most of it being able to be done by yourself.

Case in point: When I heard that Jiffy Lube wants $90 to drain and refill my differential I flipped. Now remember, that's two differentials and a transfer case (if you have 4x4) at $90 a pop. $270?! So I did it myself and felt damn good about it. I will also do the same for my coolant, just when it gets a little warmer.

I did my engine oil & filter, air filter also. So I plan on Toyota pretty much to check everything and lube whatever needs to be lubed. I do need a slight alignment so thats cool. And I plan on asking them to do a tranny flush. I just need to get all the Amsoil tranny fluid myself. That is the only fluid exchange on the truck that I do not feel comfortable doing. Sorry guys.

So as I ramble on... Do as much as you can yourself! Oh! One other thing. Your warranty is coming up towards the end, is there anything you want looked at? I have a couple of things I am going to throw at them.

Does anyone know how long this usually takes for Toyota? A day? Two days? I can't really be without a ride for long.

I must say, I agree that's a rip off. I paid $325 when I had the 30K done on my 98 Tacoma LTD, and I got a rental car for the day, and all fluids change (trans, diffs, etc).

Why did I get the 30K done if I think they are a rip off? I have no idea. I could have done it myself. But they did find a bad water pump, which made everything well worth it. Plus I got to drive a Toyota Prius, which we all know is as fast as a TT Supra.

CTB is right, you would be lucky to have them do anything significant.

Replace engine oil and filter. Remove and inspect air filter element. Lubricate locks, latches and hinges. Confirm lights, horn and wipers function properly. Check coolant, brake and washer fluid levels. Inspect drive belts for damage, adjust belt tension if required. Check steering gear box, linkage and shock absorbers for looseness, damage or leakage. Inspect ball joints and dust covers, driveshaft and steering rack boots, chassis nuts and bolts for looseness or damage. Remove wheel and brake drum, check pad/shoe thickness. only 220$ canadian thats like 140 american. but add another 60$ for the auto trasmission getting replaced to they say do it at 48,000kms but i will do it with all the other fluids
