manual hubs shearing alignment pins
Well i've managed to shear all 4 of my alignment pins on my manual hubs... anyone else having this problem? I know why its doing it, and i hear its a common problem fixed by machining the hubs (wheel and lockout) to accept more pins, and from what ive gathered from pirate its not that uncommon with solid axles, big tires, and lead feet.... im just runnin a 22RE with 33's and IFS and stock 1987 CV shafts, i figure something else shoulda gave before these....

Aisin or Warn hubs?
If the nuts holding the hubs loosen or break off the studs can shear off pretty easy. They are more locating studs instead of ones for strength, they have a very loose fit. When they put in more studs, they also make the studs larger to match the size of the hole in the hub. Front Range offers an upgraded set of the threaded studs for the hubs.

I run both hubs... but mostly warns, i carry aisins as spares. I havent gotten to shearing studs yet, just the two dowel pins. Thanks for the info Roger, very helpful as always.

A guy in my club used to have those sorts of issues on his '89 with Warn hubs. Had them shear pins off a few times and he finally just got into the habit of carrying a box end wrench in his pocket and every time we stopped on the trail, he would hop out and tighten the nuts on the hubs on both sides. Would usually find a couple loose each time.

Well lately i havent had a problem with the nuts on the studs comin loose, just the pins shearing off... im not really goina do anything til i get the SFA in, if I have problems them, i'll worry bout it then.
My main question is if anyone else with comparable power and tire size is havin the same problem... i just thought it was a large tire/power issue

My buddy was running 33s at the time, V6 and front locker. Hard to see how the locating pins could shear off without the nuts loosening on the threaded studs or the threaded studs shearing first.
