Have an 88 4Runner. Currently being modified for Search & Rescue. Biggest problem seems to be the 2.4 L, 4-banger is gutless. Trying to get more HP. Any suggestions? Also looking at lift kits, recomendations? Any other mod that has been usefull on this gen. of 4Runner would be a big help. Thanks.

have you considered an engine swap? as for other mods you can always do sliders, bumpers, lockers, gears, SAS, etc...

 

Yes. As much as I would love too, that does not fit into my current budget for the vehicle. Mods will have to be on the current engine, till I can swap it for somthing better.
Maybe air intake? Mod the chip? Anything.

 

Current mods as follows: Killed the running boards, new warn manual lockers, 31 X 10.5 toyo's, add-a-leaf (rear), CB, GE Police Radio, 1 pair of 6" PIAA off-road lights (mounted on front). Looking at beefing up the alternator, extra battery (optima), lift kit (4 inch), better front suspension, replace rear bumper, winch (warn). Am having hard time finding aftermarket parts for older 4 runners. Ideas?

 

A 22RE will do well with a mild engine upgrade:

i only say this because i havn't used them yet, but DOWNEY has great prices on springs, headers, intake, that kind of stuff. as far as internal eng mods, LC engineering is high quality stuff.....i have an 87 rnnr w/ k&n intake sys mass airflow sinser exh. header, high flow 2 3/8 pipe/ muf. you might also think about pro cam upgrade, and roller rockers(if they make them for 22re).....ooooooooo its like christmas in here....one of these days i'll have mine running. it'll be great fuuun. YEEEAAAH!

 

Using it in Search and Rescue, I imagine that reliablity is going to be extremely important and the vehicle should be as comfortable to drive on road as it is off road. I would start by making sure that the engine is in good shape. Start with a compression check, giving you some idea of what shape the engine is in. Then a good tune-up, with valve adjustment, plugs, cap, wires, check timing, etc. Now you will know what you've got to start with. The 22RE's are tough and hard to kill. I think the 31's have probably bogged the truck down. Install lower gears and, while you're in there, put some sort of limited slip in both ends(I like the Detroit Trutrac). If you are happy with the 31's, don't bother with a lift, as it doesn't really gain you anything. Doesn't help ground clearance at all, but will help approach and departure angles, which I don't think will help much for your needs. It would only help on the toughest of trails. If you really feel like you need lift, go with ball joint spacers up front and new springs in the rear. The spacers will actually gain you ground clearance up front, unlike most other lifts. I would also get rid of the front sway bar, unless you are an emergency responder, requiring extreme on road handling. This will make the truck a lot more flexy off road, while sacrificing a little bit of handling on road. Personally, I would get rid of those AAL's if you can afford it. On the applications I've seen, they usually make the rear suspension a little stiffer than I like. I'm sure there will be folks that will chime in and disagree on that one.

After all this, you should have a reliable streetable vehicle, with decent power, that will go almost anywhere you point it.
