Hi,

I just had my 60K service done and the next day the CEL and VSC OFF and VSC TRAC lights came on. I brought it back thinking it was directly related to the service they did and they told me it was a pure coincidence and would cost me $429 to fix (I told them not to touch my car). I haven't had a single light on in the four years I have owned it ('02 4Runner limited). I didn't quite believe them. What the code on the invoice says doesn't make sense.... "car was diagnosed and fault was traced to PO1133 Air to fuel ratio heater bank 1 sensor 1". Does anyone know which code it actually relates to (maybe: P1133 - A/F Sensor Circuit Response Malfunction (Bank #1 Sensor #1)?

Check the wiring to the sensor. Chances are they didn't get the connector plugged back together properly.

 

The P1133 Code does refer to the A/F Sensor Circuit Response Malfunction (Bank #1 Sensor #1)

You may also want to check,

--Open or short in the AF sensor itself ( first one toward the engine- check the connectors, harness, and hoses for all the following...)

--Check air induction system
--Check fuel pressure
--Injectors
--ECM

 

There may be something even more subtle than a simple connector.

Take your vehicle to Autozone and have them retrieve ALL the codes, write them down and post back here.

First off, what exactly did they do for the 60K service?
And 2nd, is your car a California Emissions vehicle?

I'm almost positive it's california emmissions. But I will check and post back.

For the 60k work, they wanted over $500 to do a complete job, but there was so much fluff, so I specifically told them to just change the plugs, oil, air filter, coolant, differential and transmission fluids (I just rotated the tires and checks the breaks so that was not neccesssary). It was like $250.

Something to look at (though kind of random) is a possible loose ground wire on the intake manifold. It's quite common to loosen it to change the drivers side bank of plugs and forget to tighten it when done. This will cause this code as well as the 1135 code.

The wire is on the side of the intake right next to the diagnostics plug.

Oh yeah and quite going to the dealer for service unless it's warranty!! They are twice as expensive and offer no better service than a reputable shop.

Yeup, it'll work, but it will only READ the code - it doesn't look like it'll CLEAR the code.

While you can clear trouble codes by pulling the "EFI" fuse under the hood, if you have a laptop, spend another $50 and buy a reader that will also show you codes as well as a LOT more info: http://www.obddiagnostics.com/


There are MANY other choices for standalone, PC, and Palm OBD II tools. Don't spend $50 on just a _code reader_.

Cool! If nothing else, you'll get a kick out of all the stuff you'll be able to see (water temp, fuel trims, A/FR, etc). Plus, your friends will love using it on their vehicles as well!

 

I finally ordered the reader and the code says P1135. I looked it up again and it says, "A/F Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)". After reading a ton of posts on this topic, I have concluded I have California spec. and need to replace the first A/F sensor (as compared to an regular O2 sensor for non california emmissions). I've read that it takes 15 minutes to change the sensor, but need more specific directions on how to go about doing it. Can anyone help?

you're the man. Thanks very much. I'm going to order the sensor today and hopefully fix the problem myself.

 

That coad reader WILL reset the codes. All you have to do is let it go through 4 cycles and it will re set the code.
