is this way past this engines bedtime?86 runner ,1 owner .it seems to run fine.they are hwy miles.also i obviously have to do a oil change but what else?its been sitting for 5 yrs!

 

Had 270,000 miles on my 89 22R when I wrecked it, and it was still going strong.

After sitting that long, I would change ALL the fluids (coolant, oil, tranny, diffs, etc), plugs & wires, cap & rotor, hoses, and belts. Won't be that much $ really, but will give you A LOT of peace of mind. If it's a 22RE (fuel injected) you might want to change the oxygen sensor too, but that's a fair amount of $$$.

 

im told i should do the timong chain.the complete kit at autozone is only 50 bux.should i do this ?

 

with 300k i would skip the timing chain and jsut rebuild the motor.....

i have done and engine swap, head gasket, and timing chain om y 22r, among other things... of all of those... knowing what i know now, the engine swap was the easiest....

 

Get the enginebldr kit. Steel backed guides

 

i just wanna get by maybe a yr at the most with it.if i let it go the way it is now will i always have to fear the chain breaking or skipping a tooth?if it sounds good should i just leave it alone?

 

i'd do the chain for piece of mind.

 

for 50 bux i think ill throw the cheap chain in it.

If I recall accurately, the problem is not so much the chain, but the plastic guides. Make sure you get everything while you're in there.

 

I have over 265,000 on my 22-re and thats with 31"+ tires on it since 75,000 miles.
It is getting tired but still runs great! routine maint. and oil changes will keep it running for along time.
I am now running 35" tires with no problem!

 

if you pull the vlv cvr and look down past the cam gear, you can see what condition the guides are in, or if they're in the oil pan....check first

 

If there no "chattering" at the timing cover you haven't eaten through the guides. I'd try to get some maintenance/repair history. And before doing a rebuild, I'd just do some simple maintenance and cleaning first, if the everything seems to be running fine. Ever heard of Auto-RX? I ran it through my '86 and stopped all leaks and the motor came clean. Runs better and improved my mileage now averaging 19-20mpg. I say this because I once met a women who had 600k miles on her '84 p'up (same motor). Just regular maintenance and minor mechanical repairs. Never rebuilt. It ran great. If it's not to late, don't do the cheap timing chain. They suck. I got an OE kit for $90. Well worth it to get a quality one. Will keep you from actually having to do a rebuild in the future or for future owner other than yourself. An inexpensive aftermarket O2 sensor would be fine, IMO. Flush the brake system really well, also. OH! Your fuel tank could be rusty from sitting. Pull the fuel pump and see if the filter is dirty. These are just some things I have found from having owned used vehicles, including my 4runner. But, if you intend to only keep for a year, this may be all moot. Then again, things can happen in a year.
