can't shift 4H to 2H on the fly

MT and manual hubs. as per owners manual, i can get into 4H below 25mph no problem. i'm supposed to be able to shift out of 4H at any speed. clutch or not, double-clutch, still no way, it's locked in there tight. push as hard as i can and it won't move. only way is to stop, rock it into reverse and shift.

do i need an adjustment? got any specs? couldn't seem to find anything on the search.

thanks to all for your help.

Are all 4 of your tires worn VERY evenly and the same size?

thats normal, just drivetrain bind, next time it does it put pressure on the shifter and bounce the throttle, that technique usually works for me

it's usually pretty easy when you're rolling with no load(take your foot off the gas) and push it in, at least for me.

now, when i test drove a V6 truck with a chain drive case, it was a nightmare no matter what way you put it.

hey elton, do you know the adjustement specs? anyone?

thanks to all for the suggestions. i'll give 'em all a try next time, whether or not i can solve it with a wrench. i've tried various ways of taking off the load, maybe just haven't hit it right. colder it is the worse it seems to be too--course that's generally when it need it (snow+ice).

Sometimes it helps to drive in a straight line so that both the front and rear axles are rotating at relatively the same speed.

I'm pretty sure that's not correct. All the V6 transfer cases are chain driven and they do have shift-on-the-fly capabilities, both to 4H and 2H. When driving to go skiing I do this all the time at 40-50 mph with no problem.

Ive got a 3.0, auto, chain drive and I can shift into and out of anything at any speed. Though obviously ive never tested shifting at highway speeds or anything.

well, technically the chain drive cases are shift-on-the-fly but the geardrive cases really aren't.

however if you have manual hubs or drive flanges, you can shift on the fly with a geardrive case. it's more importantly the hubs you have. auto hubs need to have the truck stopped to engage.

Same here. My old 87 with stick was shift on the fly. Worked great but every now and then it would get stuck just like he said. Sometimes I had to rock it back in reverse then forward again to get it out of 4Hi. Not all them time, just once in awhile.
