Catalytic Converter - Consequences of not replacing?

What are the ramifications of not replacing a catalytic converter on a 2001 Highlander? Called the dealer and he said they have had to replace a few on other Highlanders. Based on the OBC codes looks like it will need O2 sensor(s) as well. Vehicle has 99K. Thanks.

Federally mandated warranty on emissions equipment is REALLY long (10+ yrs I think). Cat should be covered.

I thought the emissions stuff included the cat and that it was a 100,000 mile warranty. Check your owners manual. Sounds like your stealer is a dickhead.

Federal Law says it 8 years, and 80,000 miles.

EPA says 8yrs/80,000 mi.
Aftermarket converters are 5yrs/50,000 mi.

I need to be a quicker mouse clicker! You beat me!

Emissions aside, I had a bunch of funky, weird problems when I ran for a year with mine off. Nothing that damaged the engine... just stuff that made it act weird. I got a high flow cat installed, and immediately got my low end back and didn't lose any high end from what I could tell.

They can clog to the point where your truck has performance problems or won't run at all, just like a muffler.

shocking, isn't it?
yeah, the catco is one of those items that there's no way on earth you should replace it with the original OEM unit at the dealership. for $641 you could have a really nice custom exhaust built and installed (stainless steel, even, if you're partial to the bling)

check out ebay: performancepeddler or one of those online ebay stores...

um 641 is rediculous. I promise I could get an aftermarket one bought, shipped, and installed for under $75..

I have been unable to locate an after market cat for the 01 Highlander. Are you refering to a universal style? My concern is given how emission sensistive vehicles are today will the Highlander EFI computer acept a universal cat?

Is that here in Va? We do not have emssions laws in Va. State inspections require a cat but not emissions tests... yet.
