Question 97 4Runner tune up questions??

Hey guys, i'm trying to figure out why my dad's 97 4runner won't pass emissions testing. It has 97k on the motor and the check engine light is on. I pulled the spark plugs today and they were worn down. I noticed that the plug wires on the driver side were in a weird order and maybe this was the problem. Looking at the engine from the front and starting with the wire in the back, the wires read 3, 1, and then 5. Is this right? Does anybody know the firing order of this engine. Could anybody tell me the right way to wire it. Also, does anybody know the ignition timing and how to get rid of the check engine light. Thanks!!!

Hey, welcome to the forum.

The cylinder order for the 3.4L v6 is as follows:

5 --- 6

3 --- 4

1 --- 2
--------------
Radiator

they fire 1-2-3-4-5-6.

Timing spec:

with test terminals TE1 nd E1 grounded: 8-12 DBTDC
w/o TE1 nd E1 grounded: 3-19 DBTDC

Your 4Runner has an OBD II dignostic system on it, I don't know of a way to retrieve codes without a scan tool. To reset the check engine light, you can pull the EFI fuse. That fuse is in the fuse box in the engine bay. Here's a link to a pic from jacksonpt's write up for the deckplate mod. The EFI fuse is the one circled.

Hope that helps!

Thanks that helped but i'm still unclear on if the spark plug wires are at the right places. Should the wire that says 1 on it go to cylinder 2, 3--->4, 5--->6?? Really confused??

Off subject,
but does that mean you have a 240sx turbo? If so, ka24det or sr20det...Any pics? Just curious since I have a '96 240 and am planning boosting.

Thanks Tom, that totally cleared it up. It just confused me because i thought the # on the spark plug wire goes to the proper cylinder so i guess it's supposed to be like that.

Salue- I have a 96'240 with a KA. Check your PM

If your engine check light is on you automatically fail. My mom went yesterday and they failed her because of it. At least thats the way it is here in Maryland.

Your profile doesn't say where you are, but look around for an AutoZone store. They advertise that they'll read the OBD II codes for you for free (and they did once for me). That'll help you figure out what's up.

You may be able to get them to reset the codes for you as well. But, if you're having a problem like a misfire, then resetting the codes will only clear the CEL for the amount of time it takes for the error to come back.
