how much lift can a stock replacement shock take?

My question is with a stock style or OE replacement shock how much can you really lift? Whats a good shock to get thats cheap and is made for a mild lift on a 4runner. with all this talk about lifting my truck i kinda asked but i never really heard much. I want something cheap at this point that will work. I would hate to throw on my lift and have everything torn off and find my shocks arent long enough or something stupid like that.Keep in mind i dont do alot of wheeling at this point.

thanks
Russell

Measure and see:

Basically measure your front shock extension at full droop, then disconnect the shock and see if there is any extra length. Between any extra length and possibly shimming the top of the shock down:

You may have a bit more length to deal with. Compare that extra length to the lift you want to run and go from there.

Plenty of folks on this board will say all those listed above are crap and they are entitled to their opinion, but if you're experimenting or know the part is a temporary fix or don't have the dough for the high end stuff then I think $15 vs $40 is a good bet. I have Rancho up front and the Black Diamond in back and can't tell any discernable difference.

ok. i havent un hooked the suspension but i did throw a jck under it and i think theres a problem. With the jack centered under the truck the passengerside falls farther then the drivers side by roughly 1/2 inch....im just going to replace the shocks and balljoints and any worn bushings when i do this.

Now when ordering shocks do i have to say i need it for ____ amount of lift?

Well, you would probably order them for X" of lift where X" is the lift you have or plan on running. Or for the vendors that publish actual shock dimensions, measure what you have and get something of a more proper length. Too long a shock is about as bad as too short a shock. Ideally, you need something that allows full compression and full extension of the suspension.
