What is the most gallon's you've put in your 3rd gen?

The manual says that the 3rd gen tank holds 18.5 gallons. I've run 325 miles between fillups, and was only able to put 16 gallons in. The fuel light was on for about 35-40 miles, so I wasn't about to push it any further. What's the most you guys have put in?!

i've put in 19.2, but it was sputtering as i pulled into the gas station and i usually shake the runner a bit and squeeze in another gallon or so after the pump cuts off the first time...

Always 15+ when I'm below the empty line. I've never hit 16 gallons. I think I can actually go alot farther even though my needle is bouncing below the empty line. But I don't chance it.

So you got 19.2 in an 18.5 gallon tank?! I really feel like I'm about to run out once I hit 16. I have been getting fairly good gas mileage lately (as far as 4runners go!) and comfortably put 320 miles on before filling. I've heard it's bad to take it too low (drawing sediment off of the bottom of the tank), but how low is too low? If I still have 2.5 gallons to go, is this harmful?

i was running low and totally forgot to fill up and literally didn't think about it until it started sputtering on the interstate. i was at an exit, so i immediately took it and pretty much coasted into the closest station.

18.5 is the "usable" capacity of the tank. you have some buffer volume in the expansion bubble, plus the capacity of the filler tube.

it's best if you fill up with a couple gallons left. i usually fill up when the light comes on and don't go more than 20 or 30 miles with it on.

Andy do you think there is any sediment settling at the bottom of our tanks, I mean it's been 6 years and 90,000m? and could that ever get sucked in and get caught in the fuel filter by letting it run all the way to LOW LOW E liek it was sputtering for you?

I had a girlfriend (operative word being HAD) who never had more than half a tank of gas at any time. She would regularly drive her RAV4 for a week after her gas light came on. It was real tiresome getting a call twice a month, "Could you bring me a Jerry can to such and such an intersection, I ran out of gas. Hurry too because I'm blocking traffic."

I have a long drive in front of me so I'm tempted to fill up my jerrys and run the truck dry just to see how far I can get on one tank. Who here thinks I can do 400 miles driving conservatively?

A second tank is definitely in my future. I want to have a comfortable 500-600 mile radius when I need it. Murphy’s Law; No matter how many mpg, or how large your tank, you'll need to fill up in the most ritzy tourist town causing you to shell out inordinate amounts of dough.

well my manual says that the gas tank holds 15.4 imperial gallons and 18.5 "gallons"

I never fill up before the idiot light comes on, and I always get between 14 - 15.x gallons in..

I have managed to get in 18.9 gallons once. Normally I go 30-40 miles after the empty light goes on and then I can fill up about 16 gallons (300 or so miles total). Never liked driving too much with the empty light on, especially not when the wife and kid is along with me.

I have only been able to get 14 gallons in the tank. That is with the needle at the bottom of the E line. I have only been able to get about 293 miles total out of a tank of gas at best. I need to fix my damn needle with the TSB since it is reading very wrong.

The most I have put in at a fill up is 17.2 gallons. I usually get about 315miles out of a tank on the highway and only 275 in the city.

i WISH i had a 300+ mile range. i can usually make it about 230-250 miles and i'm dry.

however, as soon as i can get my rear bumper made, i've found a 16 gallon auxillary tank that i'm thinking about adding. i already have the onboard air suspension that's going in this week to handle the extra 100# of fuel back there + about 30-40 # for the tank, so that's not an issue.

at about 17.5 MPG, it would give me an effective cruising range of about 560 miles BEFORE the gas light even came on!

the down side is that @ $2.50 a gallon, a fill-up of 36 gallons would be about $90!

bamachem:

What, where, and how much for the aux. tank?

A big reason why I want one is so I don't have to carry sand tubes in winter for added traction. I can just keep the tank full.
