2nd gen 4Runner Spare Tire Carrier

I was woudering if anyone knows of any problems with the stock spare tire mount that came on early 2nd gen 4Runners. Mine seems to be OK but it may be whoppling more then it use to, so I thuoght I would see if anyone has had a problem with these things.

What does Whoppling mean ? My is quiet but I don't have a tire mounted on it - Just a custom diamond plate tool box.

I hated mine - thus the tool box Moved the spare underneath.

I do pull a lot of trailer's though. Hooking up a trailer underneath that tire was a pain.

Once hooked to the trailer, the rear of the runner was almost impossible to get into with the tire in the way and no where to swing it ( it hits the boat )

I wheel the hell out of my 4 runner and the spare has never been a problem
underneath. I carry a jack and 2 extra cv axles inside the tire rim underneath the runner wrapped in plastic. The tool box carries all my recovery gear / strap, jumper cables, come a long, ax, bow saw, fire extinguisher, tools etc.

It's functional -That's just me though !

I have no problems with it, it's strong as hell.
However it does rattle more than I'd like on trails. I need to figure out a more solid way to clasp it to the tailgate.

Yeah, I can see how it would be a pain with a trailer.

When I had my 2nd gen, the spare tire carrier would 'squeak'. There was a hard rubber overlay on the tubing the tire was mounted on that mated with the latch which I would apply a light film of grease to and it would be fine for a few months. Other than that, it only rattled if it wasn't latched hard.

I've found that if I keep the pull handle pushed down while it's closing and still while it slams, it holds VERY secure... I've never had ANY rattling.

Thanks for the info, I have a rack on top which has a spare mount on it and thought I might have to start running it up there but I really didn't want to.
The grease film is a good idea. So for now I won't change a thing and the rattles aren't that loud, My tires and stereo take care of that. Scott

I don't have one on my '90. Is that just a bolt on?

not quite, requires a bit of cutting, drilling and in my case, welding... plus a few other replacement pieces.. black trim, reverse lights, etc...

Scottz, not intending to highjack this tread but I'd sure like to see a better pic of your front bumper. As for the rattles and squeeks from your tire carrier, I spray canned the entire mounting hub with a product used for reducing stone chipping on the lower half of the doors before painting, stopped all noise completely. I wish I could remember the exact name of the product, but I do know it was made by 3M check you local bodyshop supply house
