What's best way to regain 1/2 to 3/4" lift in rear due to heavy bumper?

I just added a custom rear bumper to my 3rd gen - and right now it weighs about 125lbs. I dropped about 1/2 to 3/4 of lift in the rear. I have the Downey coils and Bilstien shocks. What are the reccomendations for regaining lift? Some small coil spacers? New Springs? What size coil spacer would I need to gain about 3/4" of lift?

Thanks,
John

cheapest is a spacer, its prob what you are looking for, you can get 1.5 in spacers from alot of places. I know you can get 1 in spacer too. The 1 inchers will prob do it but you might as well get the 1.5's. IMO

wouldn't 1.5" spacers give 1.5" lift when all he's looking for is .5 - .75" ??

you can always go with OME or try fj80 front coils in the rear w/ OME shocks

Yea, i guess your right.
But maybe a little more couldnt hurt. like if he tows anything or has alot of gear in the back. Might as well put a taller one in while you the chance, if it would be better.

If you have the rear bumpstops, you can make some Poly spacer "rings" very easily out of some HDPE, and stick it between the bumpstop and the coil spring. Comes in 3/8" flavor.

OME HD coils or the Downey 3" coils should lift it back to normal. I would'nt use coil spacers unless i absolutely had to.

off topic but i (and many others) would like to see pics of your new bumper.
Who made it?

Downey coils are known to be soft so that's your first problem. I'd recommend that you get some OME HD coils for the rear and replace the shocks at the sametime w/ some OME's too. OME in the rear will definitely help your rear. Those with 3rd gen and aftermarket rear bumpers are pimping OME's in the rear so go with that combo.

GOod lucK!

John,

The word on the street is try thw FJ80 front coils. I got a set but haven't installed them yet. Hopefully I will before the Jambo... They are supposed to give 3" - 3.5" of lift with a stock bumper. So it should put it back where you want it.

Hmmm. Thanks for the input all.

1st off , I'll put some pics up later - some of you will see it a CO4RJ. I consider it "version 1" of the rear bumper that will ultimately be on my truck. I already have talked to them (my inlaws) to have them build me a new one or modify this one. It's a stout bumper - for sure, but I might even see if I can sell it at the Jambo.

2) I think some of you misunderstood - I already have aftermarket (Downey) coils - so I don't think adding a small spacer would make the ride much worse. If I still had the stock springs - then yes I would agree with that.

3) OME HD springs and OME shocks. I assume this would be the most expensive option, right?

4) FJ80 Front coils? Do they fit in the rear of the 4ruinner without modification? Would I need to change my Bilstiens shocks if I use the fj80 coils? What do a set of fj80 coils run? could you use junk yard coils?

Thanks,
John

I have a set that I picked up a month or so ago and decided to keep my downeys. I'll trade you for your downeys and I'll pay shipping both ways... Interested? I think my Downeys are sagging some and want to replace them. How much lift are you getting w/ yours?

No other stuff required and you can use the Billies if you want. These have about 140k on them and shouldn't settle any. Should be a solid 3" or so of lift.

Hmmm. I might be intrested. Why did you decide to keep the Downey's?

As far as lift, I have no idea how much I am getting with my Downey coils. I never really had a good stock measurement to start from. Sorry. I have about 30K on them - I didn't have a hitch so never towed or carried heavy loads on them.
