Question Ride Quality of Tundra TRD Bilsteins

I just purchased a 2002 Tundra 4x4 with the TRD package to replace my 1993 4Runner. The Tundra is a very nice truck with lots of room for dirt bikes, and WHOA that V8 POWER! But the suspension is too bouncy for my liking. I had aftermarket Bilsteins on my 4Runner and they were crisp and awesome. The TRD Bilsteins aren't even close. Should I run out and replace the bouncy Bilsteins OR should I wait and see if I get used to it?

it's the springs, not the shocks...

http://www.tundrasolutions.com is a good source for you to find your answer...

You cant compare the ride of a Tundra to that of a 4Runner. The 4Runner has a 4-link rear suspension with coil springs, so the ride will be a lot smoother.
Almost all trucks with leaf springs have a bouncey ride, its just the nature of the beast.

Talking Problem Solved!

The bouncy ride was a function of the crappy stock tires. I replaced them with Costco Michelins (X Radial LT 265 70 16) and no more bounce. I knew the stock tires were bad. And I knew any quality tire would be a big improvement. But I didn't expect the improvement to be this dramatic! Anyway, I am now quite pleased with ride and will not be changing the shocks for many, many miles.

I just lifted my friend's brand new 05 Tundra w/ PP springs and HD bilsteins. That is the setup the truck should have come with from the factory. I don't have any pics, but it is not a skid plate dragger anymore. AND the crappy, bouncy OEM ride is gone. It handles great, even with an empty load. If you don't need mch of a lift I recommend it

Replacing the Bilsteins that come on the truck with HD Bilsteins will eliminate the "bouncy" feeling. A hellwig rear antisway bar helps eliminate rear end sway.

Tundra Bilstein Shocks 101

1. OEM Toyota/Bilsteins - color yellow/blue , labeled with both the Toyota and Bilstein brand names - comes as part of the "TRD" or OF option package. Toyota part # 4851009350 (front) & 4853109141 (rear). Toyota price about $150 new (set of 4), often about $125 on eBay (set of 4)

2. TRD Bilsteins for 4x4's - color red/blue, labeled with both the Toyota and Bilstein brand names. TRD part number 00602-48500-100. Available from Toyota Dealers as a TRD Sport Part. These shocks are 40% stiffer on bump and about 25% stiffer on rebound than #1. about $285 (set of 4)

3. TRD Bilsteins for 4x2's - color red/blue, labeled with both the Toyota and Bilstein brand names. TRD part number 00602-48500-101. Available from Toyota Dealers as a TRD Sport Part. These shocks are slightly softer at low velocities, but stiffer at high velocities than #1. about $285 (set of 4)

4. HD Bilsteins - color yellow/blue, labeled with Bilstein brand name. BE5-6024 front & BE5-6025 rear. About $250 (set of 4).
NOTE - These shocks are NOT the same as theyellow/blue shocks that come equipped on trucks from the factory with the Off Road Pkg. These shocks are functionally the same as the TRD Bilsteins for 4x4's - color red/blue (#2 above)

I have both the tundra and the 4runner, and with the OME set up in the rear ans saws up front . .the 4runner was good. But honestly the ride of the stock TRD off road package tundra is awesome. Very smooth, not bouncy at all.

I've got an 05 Tundra X-SP, do you know if it has the same shocks/springs
as a stock Tundra? It seems to handle much better than expected, I'm sure
the 20" 295-45's don't hurt.

I have an 03 with the TRD off-road package, and it is bouncy as hell. I don't remember my 00 being like this (but I also had a 4runner in between the two, so I may be off). I'd sure love a way to stiffen it up, especially since when towing I can easily bottom out the rear with a decent sized bump.

Thinking airbags maybe, but I'm also wondering if maybe some stiffer springs would be the answer since I'd like it less "boaty" with just normal driving too.

TRD ride

I got a 01 Tundra TRD and I don't notice the bounce. Maybe cause I got the LTX M/S they are a smooth tire and they are a long lasting tread.
