1997 Runner Bumper Build, Acquired Materials, About To Start, Ideas? Thoughts?

I just picked up the 3X3 box tubing which will be the main part across the back below the tailgate

I also have the block and shackle kit (tow set up) which will be welded to this rear tubing, I also have a receiver blank to weld in

I have looked at bumpers in other threads, but wanted to gather some more information, I do not need a tire carrier, but am thinking about adding some other things

A big thing for me to have is the side parts that wrap around below the quarters, have them notched/with a step or something

On long drive surf trips, I put boards on top, access to them from the rear corner of the truck will make securing them easier

please post pics, thoughts, ideas

If anyone likes I can take pics of the process and post them up

Just tossed my locker in as well so will be all set for a fall trip to Nova Scotia, also going to Cape Hatteras in September....this truck is in pretty good shape and serves as my daily driver, I will paint the bumper with black bedliner paint to match the safari rack

Thanks, in advance!

Tim

Tim,

Sounds like a good project! Here's what I have on my rig

You could even make it out of square tubing too and follow the basic design.

I probably will go with square box stuff, just bought a bunch of it and it will match the look of my safari rack

nice bumper you have there

I was thinking of a similar set up, especially at the corners where it wraps around the body

i am going to get some more steel at lunchtime

so across the back it will be 3 inch box tubing

then where it goes around the side of the truck,,at the end of the box tubing will be a piece of rec tubing 1.5 x 3....so the 3 inch rectangular tubing will mate with the 3 inch box tubing that is the rear part of the bumper

from there i will use 1.5 box tubing to box a cage type thing....that will follow the line where the factory chrome wrap around bumper meets the quarter

i want to leave it open in some part similar to yours....and be rugged enough for a step to toss surfboards on the roof rack

once in place on the truck and the mounts are made, I will take it off and trim the width, then work on the side pieces that will mate with the bottom of the quarter panels

I will as I have more

definitely the parts that will wrap around the side will have a step in them for roof rack access
