1997 4 Runner Rear Axle Problem,,,locker Recommendations?
1997 4Runner SR5 5 Speed 3.4 liter......
seems I need right rear axle bearings, checked the brakes last night and they were mint
sounds like I have a wounded grizzly bear in the back seat
metal to metal type sound....did some searches seems that my hunch of axle bearings seems to be the issue
while it is apart, I will toss a locker in my rear end, or whatever rear end I get for a replacement
any recommendations on where to buy a locker and how much they are? also what should I be paying for a good used rear end from a salvage yard...and yes I know to make sure to get the correct gears etc
thanks in advance, tim

How many miles do you have? Have you had your premonition confirmed by an expert?
I think the best and easiest way to get a locker is to find the entire housing from a wrecked 4Runner (make sure there was no damage to the axle) with the same ratio and just swap the entire thing in. It really wasn't that hard. I did it with hand tools in a 110 degree garage. The front diff, now that's a different story.

I build and race cars as a hobby not that I am an expert but was a mechanic for 6 years at a high performance shop,,,I am going to check it out further tonight
seems like axle bearings
there is 220k on it
I also think best will be to swap in another axle, change the fluid throw the locker in etc etc

or could you get them with 410s in a taco...problem is in the northeast, due to winters here, i think those are pretty sought after and tough to find, i need to get my truck back together quick
tonight i am pulling the axles and third member out
