Need help with registry virus
Okay, I'm a big idiot. When I got a new hard drive, I didn't bother loading my anti virus software because it was extremely old, and not up to date. Then I never got around or never thought about getting new software. Long story short, I've been running for about two years with no virus protection. Friday night my wife tries to leave to pick up some take out, and her Burb wouldn't roll with out major issues. She took the trusty 4runner, and I checked hers out. Well I guess this isn't short after all, any I needed a diagram of her rear drum. So I looked on line. I must of hit some site while searching, and all of a sudden my browers home page gets changed, you can't search. It's asking me if I want to search for meds like viagra, or breast enlargements. It was crazy. I got some spy ware loaded and it found 152 spyware registries, and 29 worms. So I remove them. Thirty minutes later they are back...at least 6 of them. I repeat the process over and over and over and over. The next day I pick up Nortons internet security. It found a bunch of stuff, and removed it, but didn't remove like 25 other things because they weren't considered viral. WTF! Anyway, then nortons take an error, and won't work. So I run the spy ware software again. Boom. the same 6 are there again. This repeats all week. I'm about ready to throw the dang thing out the window. I don't want to format and start from scratch because there are things I would need to off load first, and it's a ton of stuff. I think it's in the registry. Can I just og in there and start deleting? I would think I would screw something up. Any suggestions. Another reason for me to hate GM.

My recommendation: backup your stuff one way or the other, and reformat. It would be such a PITA to clean everything 100%. You'll spend a lot less time working on your computer this way.
If you want to fight it, look at the PC Tips section on top of this forum, download every program concerning virii or spyware. This is really going to suck because those programs also need to be updated.
Last resort for not reformatting: HijackThis and use this page to translate the log file: http://hijackthis.de/ and kill every program it tells you to.
Good Luck!

I agree with Churnd....Just back up and reformat....2 hours and everything will be like new...OR 10 hours trying to get rid of the problems and not being able too.....but I guess hijack this is worth a shot....

Reformat - once the registry is mussed up it really is not worth all the trouble; plus if you just try to patch it there is always a chance of recurrence...in addition if you dont know what youre doing you can make things worse and crash your system bad.

Go to www.trendmicro.com and run the Housecall software. It's really good and will help get rid of most everything. Also, make sure that the spyware removal program you have isn't spyware in itself. You can check it out by doing a search for fake spyware removal programs if you have access to another computer that is online. I use Ad-Aware SE, Spybot-Search and Destroy, Spysweeper, and SpywareBlaster. They work pretty well for me. Hope ya get it fixed. That spyware ÅÅÅÅ is a pain in the ass.

It looks like HiJackThis worked! I'm on the PC now!!!!
I can tell there are some minor glitches that I'm still working with, but so far so good. Thanks you guys! Now for preventative maintenance. I'm going to put all this good info to use now.
Thanks again,
Jeremy

Get an external USB hard drive and back up all your important info.
Sometime you should wipe you drive, then reinstall all of your apps, then use the backup drive to reinstall the data info for each specific app.
A clean drive runs so much faster.
Glad you got back on for now.
